Old enough to attempt to commit murder/rape/armed robbery is old enough to get shot in self defense.

It is extremely rare that a 12 year old is committing those offenses in the first place, however. A 16 year old on the other hand is old enough to know better.

As for the boys he recommends to stay away from weightlifting till the age of 18 and up to 5 kg weights till the age of 21. "It affects their posture, flexibility and growth," said Dr Fauzdar.

Doctors caution teens from taking to weightlifting - Times Of India

    WARNING
TeensHealth.org notes that bodybuilding, lifting heavy weights and powerlifting are not appropriate for teens and young boys because they put too much strain on developing muscles, joints and bones and carry a high risk of injury. According to MayoClinic.com, boys shouldn't do more than single sets of 12 to 15 repetitions of any weightlifting exercise, even with light weights.

I don't know who that Dr is, but I would like to see what research he is basing his recommendations on.
The second article is referring to kids as young as 8 years old.

I think I gave a bit of the wrong impression by saying shoot first and asking questions later. That's a bit extreme, and I suppose it depends, but I would definitely have a gun out and would attempt to either scare him off if he was trying to get in, or hold him there until the cops arrived if he has already broken in and entered.

And yeah, I'd hate to be captain hindsight, but an alarm system is definitely a must.

That sounds like a reasonable plan to me. Good.

We'd just moved in about a week before and were still in boxes. He must have watched us move in and saw what we had and waited for a good moment. He crawled in through an open transom window sometime before dawn and since the house was built on slab, the floors didn't creak so we didn't hear a thing. He took the usual stuff theives take...purse, stereo, video player. A week after that we had iron bars and gates put up on all the vulnerable windows and doors and never had to worry about getting burglerized again. I admit we were lucky and it could have been worse....he could have been a Charlie Manson fanatic.

Is it ideal? No. But a lot of life turns out to be less than ideal, much of the time...
My old man was a graduate of the 8th grade.

Getting a degree and then working in the air conditioning isn't the only way to provide for your family's well being.

I think people sadly ignore the fact that there are many ways in which to provide for your family.

My old man starting his own house painting business. It was back breaking work but we managed and eventually moved up..... not that we were ever RICH... but my father was too proud to go on social programs.... not that they were as available as they are now anyways.

Yes, you can. Why do people always say this? Tell me what HARM there is in treating 16 year olds as adults for the purposes of the criminal justice system while not giving them voting, drinking, and marriage privleges (because they can already drive you know..... hell 15 year olds in SC can drive without supervision).

Look at teen stats for driving, STDs, teen pregnancy rates, and other such things, they will show just how "responsible" most teens are in our current society.
All things MORE government can't help.

The only thing that can help this is good parenting.

What you are basically advocating if I am getting this right is because modern parenting has been a general FAIL to teach responsibility to teenagers, that we should treat them like babies longer because it will take them longer to figure it out on their own.

    You are "subsidizing" parental apathy.

two issues are being confused here ... if someone breaks into your house and you believe that your life and the life of your children are being threatened, you probably won't have time to check the guy's I.D., so if you have to shoot him, age is inconsequential ...

on the other hand, if a 12 year old commits a crime and a 30 year old commits the same crime, there absolutely should be a difference ... if we're going to treat them the same, then 12 year olds should be able to drive, serve in the military, buy cigarettes and liquor, etc. .... agreed?

For example if a burglar is killed inside someone's home should the homeowner be in legal trouble if that burglar is a minor? If a bank robber is killed while trying to rob a bank and that bank robber is a minor should that concerned citizen or security guard be in legal trouble?
I think in general it should matter. However, I think thre should be some realistic grey area and discretion given in instances of an individual being in that 16 to 17 year old range. I think more often in such situations it could be understandably difficult to accurately determine age in the moment and that it should be given some lienency unless there is some reason to believe the individual knew the persons age.
