    Fireworks are illegal inside the cities around here but most people shoot them off anyway (the Class C or whatever for "normal" use, not those monsters Worlds of Fun and city displays use). Typically, the police will only do something about it on a citizen complaint, obvious stupidity (the middle of the 4-lane is probably a bad place), and in case of accidents and fires for insurance purposes. Noise laws are always in effect 10PM-6AM so anyone can complain about that without complaining about the fireworks themselves, but even that's pretty uncommon. We're pretty laid back in this area but I suppose Yuppieville might be more anal retentive about them.

    Sometimes the safety angle is legit. I have lived in areas of the country that are usually very dry in summer and fall, and all it takes is one idiot to misuse fireworks and cause a serious brush fire.

    Unfortunately, as authorities and lawmakers are wont to do, they take this legitimacy from some areas and apply it to other areas where this is not a serious concerns.
