Teach Children Tradition Gender Roles?

Should traditional gender and marriage roles be taught in school?

That reminds of a teacher I had in eighth grade that always had BO and I swear half the time smelled like piss.

That's why I'm like, what? Take social cues and gender role cues from my teachers? LOL! I don't THINK so. I'd be one smelly, unkempt, socially inept individual. :2razz:

I was taught how to change a tire once. However, I don't want to change my own tire. I just call some nice man to come fix it for me. :)

Same goes with mowing the yard, changing the oil in my car.... you know.... the manly jobs. :)

Well, it's a multifaceted demand, so I'm going to forget many good examples.

If you hear any casual remark about boys needing blue, girls in pink....boys do the handiwork, boys will be boys, boys are rough, girls are smarter, any remarks about male occupations, female occupations. What a man does as a gentleman, what a woman does as a lady. There can also be differences in how an instructor reacts to a situation if it is a boy or a girl student, like "toughen up" to the boys, and a bit more reassuring with the girls, perhaps protective.

It might not be as memorable as a specific lesson plan and course objectives, but that's the quality of social expectations...less noticed than expected.

I can't really argue against with much of what you are saying. It's unfortunate that a lot of kids are limited by what they believe about themselves.

While every point of socialization (schools, churches, friends, family, etc) can and does teach gender roles...it always has. A parent can help kids understand what the hell these "expectations are"...or aren't. And that's not to say that some parents teach girls that there are girl things to learn and do....and boy things to learn and do. They usually will define many of those things as they display their lives in their usual role modelling experiences. But in the end...parents can help kids understand that gender roles exist, what they mean and how social expectations can affect their lives.

Yeah...I know, that's not the normal conversation parents have with kids....but like sex, a lot of parents don't talk about it. But parents need to talk about. Gender role confusions....or expectations can mess a kid up.

There are really valid reasons people need to think hard and long about the types of values, beliefs, etc that they expect other people to teach their kids.

Eh..changing a tire sucks. If she wants the jobs that suck, I don't care. What am I supposed to do here? Stand for the power to change a tire? No thanks, I'm not starting a fight over changing a tire.

Hopefully some man will see her changing the tire in the rain as you sit in the car and pull over and help her. Then hopefully she will get in his car and drive away with him leaving you to wonder why she left.

I had one who I don't think EVER brushed his teeth and would drink coffee, and his breath was SO bad that when he came to my desk to talk to me, I would literally put my hand over my nose. Ewww, that brings back some not so pleasant smelly memories.

Sure we can teach kids about traditional gender roles. They're important in a cultural and historical context. But by no means should we teach kids that they are somehow superior or default behavior.

It's good exercise though Josie!

probably because the guy didn't change the tire correctly and she couldn't drive the dam car, so he gave her a lift to her house to make up for it.

You can type the whole word "damn" out here, ya know. :2razz:

Wrong answer. She drove away with a real man and left her sissy ass BF sitting in the car to mull things over.

I'll bet this woman could change 10 tires in the time it would take you to change just one.

thanks ... I've gotten several warnings, so I'm being careful ... damn (I feel better already) ...

good post ... this is silly ... too bad women are weighing here on the side of urging women to appear fragile and helpless ... if for no other reason than their safety, women -- everyone who drives! -- should know how to change a tire ...

Can we take out "change a tire" and replace it with "shoot a gun"? :)

Thanks much! :)

It's really not that difficult or physically taxing to change a tire. A lot of kids could do it too, I'm sure.

sure, let's equate these two :wow: ... but let me get this straight ... you're for women not changing tires, but you are in favor of women learning how to shoot and packing a gun ... Is that right?

it's not ... I think the poster just didn't think it was very feminine, unlike shooting someone ...

I never said I was against women changing tires. I think it's very smart to know how to change a tire. I just choose not to do it myself.

You said it's important for the woman's safety to know how to change a tire. Don't you think it's just as important (even more, really) for a woman's safety to know how to defend herself against someone who might want to harm her? Women shouldn't be fragile or helpless, right?

How about both? Women should learn how to change tires and how protect themselves in the most effective way that they feel comfortable with.

now that makes more sense, but the poster clarified her point ...
