I chalk up most of my nephews political views to being college age but over a weekend BBQ they seemed pretty adamant that some of our public (federally recognized) holidays were insensitive to minorities in this country. They seemed to view Thanksgiving and July 4th as particularly offensive.
Without knowing what they found offensive, it's rather hard to discuss their thoughts. I can't imagine what would be offensive about celebrating the birth of our nation, but to each their own.

I wonder what Federal holidays they'd like to see? None? Tell them to get a job; they'll have less time to contemplate supposed slights.
The devil whispered in my ear, "You cannot withstand the storm." I whispered back, "I am the storm."

Mostly we break bread they help us and in return we take their land and kill their people . Any talk of the atrocities in school have been kept to a minimum and I had to find out about the small pox blankets on the history channel .

"America" doesn't only refer to this nation, but two entire continents.

Either is better than Indian, though, because I'm not sure if anybody noticed but this area is not even remotely close to India.

A wee bit of a time difference between the two occasions....

Thanksgiving was celebrated WITH the Native Americans. The atrocities came later...

I don't call them Indians but natives , not Native Americans . They are called Indians because that is where Columba's thought he was at . Their are two Americas , North and south .

If they removed either of those holidays from the list of federally recognized holidays for "insensitivity" purposes, I would begin a very loud and abrasive crusade to expel MLK Day from the ranks as well.

If you're offended by a holiday, sack up and shut up.

So don't hang a flag and don't buy a turkey. Simple as that.

And so after we did not need them we killed them off or forced relocated them . Is that a reason to celebrate it .

    *sigh*
Because something bad happened later, we should deny the good that happened first?

It's not like the Pilgrims turned around and slaughtered their dinner guests.....

Just so you know, if you ever buy or wear gold jewelry, you're a raving hypocrite. There were probably more Indians killed in the pinnacles of Manifest Destiny gold rush than when the Pilgrims first landed.
