I chalk up most of my nephews political views to being college age but over a weekend BBQ they seemed pretty adamant that some of our public (federally recognized) holidays were insensitive to minorities in this country. They seemed to view Thanksgiving and July 4th as particularly offensive.
Just call it Thanksstealing and leave the 4 day holiday. The turkey will give its life for the sins of the European invaders.

Thanksgiving has to do with the death of the Native people or did I just read this wrong?

If so, that is a new one on me.....

    Thats a new one..............
People who do not know what Thanksgiving is about should NOT celebrate it, or they should learn about it.....either way....
Maybe we should not have a Columbus Day; but a Discovery Day instead....actually Columbus discovered nothing....nothing that had already been discovered...

No one is forcing your nephews to celebrate squat. Personally if they were my nephews I would tell them to quit their whining and grow the **** up.

Thanksgiving really is just a harvest celebration. And the 4th, well it will only not become a Federal holiday when there is no US of A to celebrate. Perhaps they should move to a country that fits them better?

Ergo, no more holidays, period.

Also, I think everyone should wear burkas, just in case. Even men. Especially men, now that I think about it.

If so, I think that's just dumb.

I think the same standard could be applied to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I still think it would be a dumb standard, but it applies in a sense.

I'd think that Columbus Day would be higher in the running for demolition than the 4th. Or maybe even Christmas (we being a secular nation and all thhat).

In the end I'm not in favor of any of them ending up on the cutting room floor, but of the bunhc I see the least call for cutting Independence Day.

Why do polls like this exist? Come on, guys.

Columbus Day is particularly weird because Columbus was objectively a failure in his efforts. The man thought he'd found The Indies because he grossly underestimated the size o the earth, despite the fact that th actual size of the earth was pretty well known by then.

And if these people really find things offensive, then what do they propose as alternatives ?
Well don't you know? If you find something offensive for any reason the appropriate response is to try to make sure nobody else gets to do it.

I don't call them Native Americans since they probably did not want to become Americans in the first place so I call them Natives since they are Native to the area . Learning history is always a good thing though ...
