Oops.... well now the cat is outta the bag....

The holidays are an effort of indoctrination. They ought to be. The counter is merely another way of interpreting the same thing. I just think that many of the more radical set tossed aside a good thing too rashly, just because some of its backstory wasn't so pleasant.

I chalk up most of my nephews political views to being college age but over a weekend BBQ they seemed pretty adamant that some of our public (federally recognized) holidays were insensitive to minorities in this country. They seemed to view Thanksgiving and July 4th as particularly offensive.
Your nephews have been brainwashed by pc operatives.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

With all the lights and decorations plus candy it will be very hard and people need to be weaned off their dependence on Christmas first before anyone even considers celebrate a different holiday that day besides as it says in the post it all about ham and Santa clause so its cool its not like anything religious' happened that day or anything anymore its all about the ham .

Here in Canada we get to benefit from two Thanksgivings - ours and yours - I'm pretty sure people in America mostly don't have a clue that ours is different.
Isn't t your holiday about blessing and turkey but in October , and Thanksgiving Day in Canada is linked to the European tradition of harvest festivals

Non-religious people can exchange gifts and hide eggs for their kids. Indians and non-Indians can eat turkey and stuffing and mashed potatoes.

Long story short, it's no big deal. Anyone lobbying to eliminate holidays for reasons as petty as what was mentioned earlier in this thread is so full of angst that they're better off eating a bullet and ending their misery. Either that or just go postal already. End result is the same.
Just lobbying those darn TV specials . For a cheapskate's like me the holidays come a week after the Christmas ,VD and Easter etc where every thing is 50 % off or more .

Keep both irregardless of the delicate sensibilities of some "Americans".

I don't get the part about either being insensitive to minorities.

The only Federal Holiday that truly shows any insensitivity is MLK day. They minimalized the day dedicated to the man who lead our country to freedom and it's creation. Also the minimalized the man who ended slavery and reunited the Union. In return we get a day dedicated to a Black civil rights leader. Are blacks the only people in America that have had to struggle for equal rights? Have not Asians, Hispanics, Native Americans and others also had to struggle? So why is the day named MLK instead of Civil Rights Day, thus reflecting and honoring all who struggled for civil rights instead of only recognizing black peoples struggles? Why was it necessary to reduce Honoring of two white men to give "honor" to a black man?
Only a fool measures equality by results and not opportunities.
