Are you proud to be American/citizen of your country?

Would you openly say you are proud to be American/nationality of your country?

It wasn't my achievement. Pride is a vice anyway.

Sure I am, my parents worked very hard after immigrating here and the American way of life did well by them, and me. Sure I'm proud to be an American.

If I could combine the first and third option that would fit perfectly. I'm proud to be an American and will surely tell anyone that's wondering on the subject. BUT, this place has things to fix.

In Germany, for understandable reasons, many people are reluctant to say they're "proud to be German".

How about you? Are you proud to be American/British/[insert nationality here]? Or rather, would you openly word it this way?

Proud of my country? Yes

Proud of my government? No

I'm not proud to have simply been born in this particular region of the world, but I am proud of my accomplishments. Many of which would probably not be possible had I been born into another culture, or nation.

I can say that I'm proud to be an American, but I most definitely consider it a lucky accident of birth.

Like others, though, that doesn't mean I give my country carte blanche. We have many issues and our government needs serious work, but that won't happen until the people themselves rework their mindsets first. Whether we like to admit it or not, our government gives us what we want.

That being said, I think I would also be proud to be a citizen of many different countries, had I been born there. I've spent time in Europe, albeit 3 decades ago, and at one time considered settling in Germany. I liked it that much.

There are times that I am terribly disappointed in many Americans and as such I sometimes feel ashamed to be an American. Most of the time though I am proud to be an American and I have no problem saying so.

I am very proud to be an American. It is mostly luck of where you are born, but if one actively tries to make it a better place I think you can take more pride in it.

I'm very proud to be an American!!! Not proud of the current government but I love my nationality!

I'm an American, and I'm proud to be an American.

What would the world be like today if America had never existed?

Think about it.

I'm proud being an American.

We all ready know that Michelle Obama isn't and that Barack Obama said in his own words "I never looked upon myself being an American but an internationalist."

But Americas liberal politically correct immigration policies cheapen American citizenship. And right now in Congress they want to go further.

Britannia would still rule the waves.

There would likely be no Republics in the world.

Not since Obama took office. I felt even worse when he was re-elected.

Using 'proud' in a loose sense, yes, I'm proud to be American but like ecofarm, I'm a patriot but I don't really believe in nationalism. There are many good countries in the world and we should cooperate with them, not strive to plant our political and economic seeds in their yard.

I'm an American, and I'm proud to be an American.

Why? I'm British, but as many perspicacious people have pointed out in this thread, where one is born cannot be anything more significant than a happenstance. Now I could claim a pride in the citizenship of a nation which has influenced the modern world to a greater extent than even Rome, a nation which has given the world its lingua fanca, and much of the world its language and culture, began the industrial revolution, created much philosophy and literature, and a nation which is the mother to some of the greatest modern societies, including the USA. But what has any of that to do with me? I am a 19 year old who has done nothing of any note, and who has contributed nothing to the achievements of my nation. How can I express pride therein with any degree of honesty or realism?

What would the world be like today if America had never existed?

Well, I have, and I expect it would be much the same but with different national actors, and the same could be said of any developed European country - Germany and Great Britain, in particular. European colonisation of the Americas, and the antipodes, would have happened, of course, but places like the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand would not have developed without Britain. To get an idea what those places might have been like, take a look at the colonies developed by the French, Dutch, and Spanish. The USA has indeed been a most successful military/industrial complex, but it has not been the blueprint for western civilisation. It, like Canada and Australia, is too young for that. :)

'Good afternoon, Occam's Razor. :2wave:

:agree: When we hear that foreigners hate America, I don't believe that they mean the people. It's our government and its policies they don't like. Most of us wouldn't like it if someone were bombing us and killing our children, either!

I can't take credit for having been born here.

Many of our government's policies, especially much of our foriegn policy, past and present, make me ashamed of being from the USA. I also think there are many good aspects to our country, even some of the people are OK.

Yes... well, thank you for that, and good afternoon.

I've traveled abroad and can confirm you belief.

To say you're preaching to the choir would be a massive understatement.

Overall, yes I am. If I wasn't happy/proud to be an American or if it changes, I'll find a new country to make my home that comes closer to representing my goals, ideals, beliefs, and systems.

Frankly, I think that most people who hate the USA should get the hell out.

There are some who equate the people and the government, but for the most part I believe you are correct.

Although we've had our mistakes, overall I am proud of America.

I am ashamed of our National policies, but in my youth I was a "blind patriot," and thought the USA was the savior of the world. Vietnam woke me up. We are not the good guys that the people think we are. We are Imperialists and resource thieves and have historically thrived on war. That is why we have a $700 billion Military Offense budget. I like living here except for the frustration of not being able to change the country's direction. I have accepted that the vast majority of the citizens have no clue what is going on. That's the beauty of the Forums because it is an opportunity to inform.

Good evening, radcen. :2wave:

I believe that most people on this planet want what we do...the ability to raise their children in peace; access to clean water and sufficient food to survive; a government that is responsive to their needs; and the freedom to better themselves. It seems that the first thing people do when they are "liberated," is to have the right to vote. Since some countries have never known the concept of democracy, but only chaos or a dictatorship, they surprise us by voting for more of what they originally rebelled against, if we can believe what is reported! Go figure! Maybe time is the only answer......

You sound like an arrogant American. Was that intentional?
