Nay. If there was one it would soon be over at our demise for we are a minority in the world sadly.

I'm an atheist, but even I can see that religion is under attack. I don't approve, but there aren't enough people fighting religion for their movement to have a serious impact.

In the US? No. There is no war on atheism. There is no war on Christmas. Is there prejudice against atheists? Sure. In some places in the States it is fairly rampant. In other places it isn’t given a second thought. But I wouldn’t call it a war, even in a metaphorical sense.

However, outside of the US? I am currently living in a country where people are rotting away in prison for being atheists. It is actually a fairly tolerant country when it comes to religions. Christian AND Muslim holidays are celebrated equally and recognized as government holidays. But if you publically espouse being an atheist you risk being dragged away from your home and being thrown in jail. Is there a “war” on atheism here? Definitely.

No, and can you please fix up the threadname, it's seriously confusing.

Singapore?

Singapore?

Given how much I have talked about what I do for a living on this board I have decided not to say the actual country on a googleable forum. I might in a PM though.

As an atheist, no, I don't think so. Atheists do not have equal rights in certain facets of life, for example the BSA policy, and are sometimes greatly annoyed by imbecilic comments by even public officials that this is a christian country. However, I don't fear being hunted down and I certainly don't shy away from stating my views when the topic comes up. If it was serious persecution, I would be hiding behind multiple proxies at the least before posting this.

I don't think there is a war on atheism in America and I don't think there is a war on atheism in Europe either. Unfortunately that's as far as my personal experience scope reaches too.

I think that less people are going to church in America so a lot of people in the older generations tend to have a view that America is losing faith in God all together, but I just think that more people are spending their Sundays at home and not in church. Some people think this is bad, and if you are Pat Buchanan you think that less people in church means America is going to burn in the fiery pits of hell.

I'm of the opinion that there isn't a war on any religion or atheism (unless you believe that certain people in America are waging a war against the Muslims and vice-versa) (Although I think it's more westernization that Christianity). I just think people are bewildered by change, and a more vocal group of atheists are more prominent today.

You make some good points. As for the bolded, and how it is relevant, I think it is related to another current thread on the increasing "coarseness" in our society. People in my parents' generation tend to believe that it is because of a growing rejection of God and religion. I personally think it's just because people no longer have the self-control to stop themselves from making asses of themselves, and they openly exhibit their trashy behavior. The religious constraints that used to serve to make people cognizant of their socially acceptable behaviors, have been lifted, and they are letting it all hang out, unfortunately.

Scout Oath (or Promise)

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

Been there since 1911 roughly 11 months after it incorporated.

1910, first HQ (temporary) was in a Young Men's Christian Association

Safe to say the org was founded with faith in mind.

but they'll gladly let you buy their overpriced popcorn....;)

A war on Athiesm? No, they are the ones who are declaring war on God by trying to convince the world He doesn't exist.

I personally am not trying to convince anyone he doesn't exist but there are many others who try hard to convince me he does. Would I call that a war? Hardly, and I actually enjoy talking with religious people and many times invite Jehovah witnesses into my house just to talk and question each other. They want to save me and I enjoy giving them a challenge :)

If there's a war on Christmas, a war on Christianity, etc. then there is certainly a war on atheism. Bout time we got our special propaganda war too!

BSA is a private org. What's the issue?

I don't think religion is under attack. I think there are just alot more non-religious people. They are not atheists, they just don't belong to a religion.

War on atheism? That's no fun. You can't blow up a school of thought. Let's have a war on atheists like the war on wimmens, Christians - you know, real people as the target. We can let the IRS lead the way.

I think after century after century of religious domination...I think that it's laughable that religions and their followers are intimidated by atheists. Just because atheists are standing up and saying that religion and government don't mix...isn't reason to get all upset. The reality is: government and religion don't mix.

I'm a native Texan. Texas is a strong bible belt state. I'm atheist. Have been openly so since about 13. I've experienced decades of condemnation by people of religion. I was beaten as a kid for not participating in church. I really caught hell from friends and family as I grew up to the point that some family wouldn't talk to me and I lost friends over it. Now, when I was a kid, it wasn't all the common that people, particularly where I lived, talked about being atheist or atheism in general so I was a bit ahead of my time.

When I told my family I didn't believe in god...I might as well as said that I was a Gay Jap-Talian-Negro. Even today in Texas...although its better because Texas has a lot of people from other states, it's still a sore subject for quite a few.

Thank god my wife is an atheist, too. ;)...no pun intended. Well, maybe a little bit of a pun is in that comment. Let's just say...no disrespect intended.

"Under attack" really just means that religion is facing serious criticism for the first time. It was used accustomed to silencing critics with violence, torture, or murder that having to actually respond to criticism is still a new idea to much of the world's religions. The big difference now is that detractors of religion are no longer forced into silence.

But not everywhere. There are still lots of places in the world where atheism or any kind of criticism or rejection of the majority religion is met with violence. Historically, this was the norm everywhere and one could certainly say that there was a war on atheism. In much of the world, for much of history, any deviation from religious orthodoxy could be met with violence. Only in a few parts of the world and only recently has this war diminished. But let's be honest, the term "war on _____" is an empty phrase. Let's retire it and speak more accurately. Religion, in many parts of the world and for most of history, has exterminated atheists. It still happens today in many places.

So no, there is no "under attack". There is simply the open and honest search for the truth. Religion, for the first time, has to play by the same rules and have a fair fight with atheism. And that, of course, is why it is losing.

A war on Athiesm? No, they are the ones who are declaring war on God by trying to convince the world He doesn't exist.

Pursuit of truth is a war to you? What a stressful life you must lead. Most of the world already doesn't believe in your god. It has always been this way. The truth will win out.

Exactly, when Christ returns and destorys the world. You are correct, the truth will win out.
