Left the Army as an E-7.....Combat Veteran/ 2 Tours. Volunteered and was not Drafted.

I just gotta say this is kinda funny. When I reach E-7 (if not this year, then within the next 2), due to my rate, I will be an MMC in the Navy.

Heya RN.

Is that MasterChief? I thought E7 in the Navy was a Chief Petty Officer.

No, as a Master Chief, I would be MMCM and E-9. MM stands for Machinist Mate, C is for Chief.

My understanding is in Navy enlisted ranks the last character in the three character rank represents the actual pay grade and the first two represent the MOS. I have a logistics chief petty officer (E-7) who works for me and hsi rank is LSC. I have a yeoman Navy Petty Officer 2nd class who works for me and his is YN2.

ETA: I was beat to the punch. Now I don't get to look all smart and stuff.

You are an MM? Dunno why, but I always assumed you where an ET.

So you do dirtier work than 99.99 % of the men in this country...

I believe she's referred to as a snipe. ;- ) Better than being referred to as a deck ape.

Have no idea if those terms are used today.

The poll would only allow me to list 10 options so I had to collate some of them. And admittedly in doing so I did so with the bias of a modern day Army member. E-5s and E-6s are both considered “junior NCOs” in today’s Army. And most E-4s in the Army are not Corporals, and thus not NCOs, so I lumped them in with E1s-E3s. I tried to give the “senior NCOs” their own slots. Admittedly the break down may not be perfect.

I agree, the specialist ranks back then were confusing. Though I have to say, I don’t necessarily think that having a career path in the military, such as a career Specialist in which one just focuses on doing a particular job but never takes on higher leadership roles, is a bad thing. I have known Army mechanics who were damn good mechanics but who should NOT be leading soldiers. Why force them to move up to the NCO ranks or get out? Why not just let them keep fixing vehicles if that is what they excel at?

Heya SG.....Yep, when I was in. I was a Cpl. E4 not a Spec 4.

Although when I took My Demo Training at Fort Leonardwood. I got into a lil bit of Trouble Messing around with a CWO-3's Daughter. He didn't like that at all. Even Worse was he hated people from Chicago. He didn't get to out of pocket. Considering I wasn't Reg Army. ;)

I got into with a Full Bird at Leonardwood too. If you remember leonardwood going to OSUT training. Well Got into trouble due to not Saluting. I was so Use to seeing all the Trainees in their Khakis. That Damn near everybody looked like an Officer. Especially wearing a hat and not the C-Cap. Well he came round a corner and I didn't Salute. At first I thought he was a Chaplain. Ole boy Busted me down to a Private with no Stripe for a week. Basically for what I said out of my mouth to him. Plus I threw in the comment about Reg Army. Man he exploded and I waxed hot. I was going to take him out Right then and there. Several of my Bruthas had to restrain my azz. Then I got it from my CO too. Ran my azz ragged for a month. But I got my stripes back in the end. ;)

C-Cap. Go ahead MMC, you can say it.

How many infraction points would you get on the DP if you said it ? I was once suspended on a forum for saying it.

About 15 years ago I was invited to join a private, by invitation only military forum that was only open too active and retired CPO's and SNCO's even though I was never a SNCO. It was a website where you could talk like the way soldiers, Marines and sailors use to talk like before political correctness was forced upon the military.

One day the discussion was who coined the term C-Cap. This one old salty retired Navy CPO tried to claim that the Navy did. Sailors don't even wear a C-Cap. In the end it was decided the the Army came up with the name probably before WW ll.

Yep, it was the Army alright.....they were called overseas caps at first. It was also called the Piss Cutter. The Army Doughboys were the First to get them then you Grunts. Didn't you guys call them Chip hats or biders. Besides C-Cap or Vag's Cover.

You know Next year they will be making the Mean Green Obsolete. 2014 will mark the end of the green uniform for the Army.

You teach math to officers or so?

I teach the core courses for areas like crypto, combinatorics and number theory being my specialties, but more than half of my time is spent in research.

For us young Vietnam era Marines, piss cutter was the norm. The older Marines, the lifers who been in for awhile still used C-Cap. My father a Marine in the Pacific during WW ll and just about all WW ll vets used the C-Cap. Don't ever remember chip hats being used.

I heard some scuttlebutt of the Army coming up with a new uniform. Just hope it's more military looking than today's uniform. Lets hope Obama wasn't involved.
The Army's Vietnam era khakis were definitely military.
The Marines dress uniforms has remained about the same for the past one hundred years. They dumped the John Brown belts after WW ll but today's Marine officers are wearing the black John Brown belts with their dress blues.

Yeah.....I just put up a thread on the Uniforms. For the Camos it will be affecting all branches of Service now. ;)

Im a retired AF E7. 7 tours in to the ME. Current GS12 and work with the Army. I was raised by a bunch of old school Navy Chiefs, which partially explains why I am such an asshole at times.
