No, as a Master Chief, I would be MMCM and E-9. MM stands for Machinist Mate, C is for Chief.

My understanding is in Navy enlisted ranks the last character in the three character rank represents the actual pay grade and the first two represent the MOS. I have a logistics chief petty officer (E-7) who works for me and hsi rank is LSC. I have a yeoman Navy Petty Officer 2nd class who works for me and his is YN2.

ETA: I was beat to the punch. Now I don't get to look all smart and stuff.

You are an MM? Dunno why, but I always assumed you where an ET.

So you do dirtier work than 99.99 % of the men in this country...

I believe she's referred to as a snipe. ;- ) Better than being referred to as a deck ape.

Have no idea if those terms are used today.

E-5s and E-6s are both considered “junior NCOs” in today’s Army. And most E-4s in the Army are not Corporals, and thus not NCOs, so I lumped them in with E1s-E3s. I tried to give the “senior NCOs” their own slots. Admittedly the break down may not be perfect.

I agree, the specialist ranks back then were confusing. Though I have to say, I don’t necessarily think that having a career path in the military, such as a career Specialist in which one just focuses on doing a particular job but never takes on higher leadership roles, is a bad thing. I have known Army mechanics who were damn good mechanics but who should NOT be leading soldiers. Why force them to move up to the NCO ranks or get out? Why not just let them keep fixing vehicles if that is what they excel at?
    Heya SG.....Yep, when I was in. I was a Cpl. E4 not a Spec 4.

Although when I took My Demo Training at Fort Leonardwood. I got into a lil bit of Trouble Messing around with a CWO-3's Daughter. He didn't like that at all. Even Worse was he hated people from Chicago. He didn't get to out of pocket. Considering I wasn't Reg Army.

I got into with a Full Bird at Leonardwood too. If you remember leonardwood going to OSUT training. Well Got into trouble due to not Saluting. I was so Use to seeing all the Trainees in their Khakis. That Damn near everybody looked like an Officer. Especially wearing a hat and not the C-Cap. Well he came round a corner and I didn't Salute. At first I thought he was a Chaplain. Ole boy Busted me down to a Private with no Stripe for a week. Basically for what I said out of my mouth to him. Plus I threw in the comment about Reg Army. Man he exploded and I waxed hot. I was going to take him out Right then and there. Several of my Bruthas had to restrain my azz. Then I got it from my CO too. Ran my azz ragged for a month. But I got my stripes back in the end.
