The government is the People.

No, the government is government. A small, select group of individuals. The People are The People. It's quite possible for a small group with power to begin abusing that power. Which is what we have here and when that abuse acts against the rights and liberties of The People, you have treason.

Really? You actually believe that or are you pulling my leg?

Terrorism, sponsored directly (i. e. US airstrikes, drone strikes) or indirectly (terrorism perpetuated by Contras, Augusto Pinochet, Mobuto Sese Seko, Efrain Rios Montt, . . .) by the US government accounts for more deaths and injuries of children/civilians in the world than the activities of any other terrorist organization.

You say that until it happens on YOUR Main Street. Bottle bombs at the Starbuck's outdoor cafe; bombs in the shopping center where you and your family shop; airliners that drop from the sky. The fact that the government is monitoring phone records -- not conversations, mind you, but calls -- is a small price to pay so that me and mine -- and you and YOURS -- can be safer, in my opinion.

Think how much safer we would be if the government did actually listen in? Where does it end? If we lived in a police state with a curfew we'd be even safer. At some point freedom means accepting risks.

Maybe instead of arresting people for treason that reveal wrong doings in the government we can celebrate them as patriots and tell the government to leave them the hell alone. Maybe the government can just stop declaring things top secret due to the actions being wrong. I know, what? Crazy ass stuff going on in here, but what do you think?

This Edward Snowden we all know will be dragged in and charged with treason, but he is not a traitor, but a goddamn patriot. I'm sick of the government violating the rights of people and then charging those brave enough to speak up about it with treason. If this isn't an act of an out of control government I really don't know what is.

The government's lack of responsiveness and accountability to the people of the United States (while mostly the fault of the people) has probably reached the point where 'illegal' actions like this have become morally appropriate. What exactly that means in the current legalistic machinery, I'm not sure. Ideally a pardon and march toward legal and political reform so that such pardons are no longer necessary.

Treason and espionage are two different things.

I understand that.

What they will put him on trial for is a violation of 18 USC § 798, which will hold, because the release of classified information to unauthorized persons is a very serious offense.

Serious because it threatens the powers that be. How anyone could be in favor of convicting this person is beyond me. As an American, I fully distrust the government. I have my whole life and always will hold distrust of their actions. There is nothing more American than distrust of a powerful centralized government which we have.

The courts won't see it that way, nor should they.

I understand they won't see it that way. The man is pretty much dead at this point. He has no viable future which is a shame.
