    Re: Turkey's position

It's a matter of perception, of course, but I think of Turkey as a Western country. Being a secular democracy and a member of NATO, with part of its territory in Europe - that is good enough for me.

Aside from the whole 'locking up its political opponents thing' But then again Franco and Salazar did that (and worse) also and they were no less 'pro-western' so i would reiterate that we need to move on from the idea of 'The West' being the fountain of benevolence that we wish to believe it is in order for this debate to be meaningful.

I answered the question, as it was posed. Turkey now is not a full-bloom liberal democracy, and the treatment of non-violent Kurdish dissidents is of particular concern. One way of nudging it toward "blooming" would be to invite this fast-developing economy into the EU - after certain conditions have been met....

On the contrary it is getting worst, its ratings for journalistic freedom in particular have fallen dramatically. Though of course had we not backed the 1980 coup there probably would not be an AKP.

And some people reply to posts (#9, in this case) without reading them. I was talking (obviously) about Turkmenistan and Turkmenbashi - you know, the country in Central Asia, capital Ashgabad, etc.

This poll is a very general one. Please select the option that best defines Turkey for you.
Mustafa, why are you calling Turkiye as "Turkey?"
