I type about women who choose to have this done all the time. They have witnessed first hand their mothers or sisters, etc., suffering with breast cancer and have decided for themselves that keeping the breasts is not worth the agony.

I salute women who pre-emptively do this.

It can't be an easy decision to make, especially someone in a position like Angelina Jolie.

I don't think having a elective mastectomy to minimise a very significant risk of cancer is any more "nutty" than avoiding hospital treatment to minimise a comparatively small risk of hospital acquired infection. Nothing personal, but I don't think you're addressing the question rationally.

I guess some people think that breasts should be the most important thing in one's life. Kind of silly and shallow if you ask me.

Not to mention, if she didn't tell, Dragonfly would have never even realized that she got fakies.

So she underwent major surgery to prevent something that may or may not have been an issue for her.

That seems highly CRAZY to me.

Would you undergo something that traumatic to prevent the possibility of getting cancer?

Detected early enough aren't most breast cancer cases survivable?
It is definitely her decision to make, presumably on the advice of her doctor and hopefully a few other specialists along the way. Hard to be too judgemental when you don't know the facts and you're relying on a gossip column.

That said, I'm a man in my late 50's and it kind of hits home with the old prostate cancer screening and preventative surgery that was quite prevalent in the last decade and has now started to come into question. It's believed now that most men who don't have family histories of prostate cancer may be unnecessarily going under the knife based on early screening and detection. It seems to be understood that most men will have prostate cancer sometime late in life but men seldom die from prostate cancer because something else gets them before the prostate cancer can. Why risk your later years with possible incontinence, impotence, and other side affects from prostate cancer when the treatment is likely worse than the disease?

We don't know Ms Jolie's family history, other than the fact her dad seems to be crazy, so I'm willing to bet if she did indeed have the surgery there must be some serious family history that caused her to act. I wish her well going forward.

Millions of people have surgery every day. And you just provided a handful of cases, some of them not even in the US. Also, OR's and general admissions don't even have the same entrance for exactly this reason.

Your anecdotes don't disprove the general truth that surgery on not-very-structurally-important body parts is fairly low-risk. The biggest risk is actually the anesthesia. Infection is pretty far down the list.

I'm sure I could find a handful of articles of people dying of scarlet fever in hospitals. Doesn't make it a legit enough concern to avoid preventing yourself from getting cancer.

That's a rational decision since some of these mutations basically guarantee you will get certain kinds of cancers. If she waits to get breast cancer, she probably has to get the bilateral done at that point anyway, and then if it is an aggressive form of cancer it may have already spread to a lymph node and then all bets are off. My sister and mom both have the BRCA2 mutation and got cancer in their early thirties and both went through/are going through hell to stay alive.
