    Are Spokane police over reacting

Bloomsday is this weekend, it is like the north west version of the Boston Marathon and the Spokane police are not letting backpacks or large bags anywhere near the race.

SPOKANE, Wash. - With those terrible images from the Boston Marathon bombing fresh in their minds, Spokane Police detailed their plans to keep this weekend's Bloomsday safe Tuesday afternoon.
You probably knew it was coming: This year you won't be able to get anywhere near those sardine-packed staging areas wearing a backpack, and, as you might expect, because of Boston, any Spokane police officer who thought they'd have Bloomsday off, is now working it.

Re: Are Spokane police over reacting

I dont know about overreacting...its kind of a no win situation for them. Maybe by announcing enhanced measures someone that might be considering targeting such an event would be less inclined to strike there. But its really kind of silly. We saw the blast radius of the bombs used in Boston. You could impact as many people in a mall or a theater on any given day of the week. Perhaps what really needs to happen is the citizens of the country need to developed a heightened sense of awareness. One of the nice things about post 9-11 is I highly doubt anyone will be able to hijack a plane in this country using box cutters ever again.

Situational Awareness. I dont know about anyone else but I ALWAYS scan crowds everywhere I go. It may be from 7 years in the ME, but when I sit down in a theater I scan every row, every person, already there or coming in. I do it covertly and I dont obsess about it, but I still do it. Same in every crowded situation. People need to be "aware". You can make a bomb out of items you will find at any hardware store. There are over a million violent crimes a year. A little preparation and attention will go a long way to make you NOT a victim.

Thank you for an honest answer. Recently I posted a thread saying I thought packs should be banned from events like this and people came down on me like a ton of bricks, now that this is actually being done as I predicted it would those people are sitting on their hands.

Man over-reacts when his fellow man is needlessly murdered.....its natural....and not the right thing to do....
Instead we should be asking WHY ...
IMO, we are now too much the "land of the free.........".
We need to control our "semi-insane"...
    Yes !
Some so-called freedom and liberties will be lost.....and the libertarians will be crying....
    Banning backpacks is silly.

It's an overreaction and likely ineffective. As I said in your other thread, targeting specific tactics is not wise since tactics and targets can change faster than we can.

So instead of the marathon, they target a mall. Instead of a backpack, a briefcase, or a for a suicidal terrorist a vest.

The only thing that really works is better intelligence gathering. And we have to grow up and accept that perfect safety is unachievable.
