There are websites giving exact details on how to make bombs easily, including such as was used in the Boston murders and attack. Should the government be able to outlaw it? Should websites that give bomb-making instructions be protected free speech?

it might not be the best thing to put on the internet, but it is free speech

I just checked the website of the National Incindiary Device Association, and they claim that when bombs are outlawed, only outlaws will have bombs.

Having spent umpteed millions of dollars purchasing the finest Senators money can buy, they are now moving to phase 2 with their new slogan "Nobody's too crazy for a suitcase nuke".

[sarcasm] Hey, bombs are arms. We have a right to bear bombs. Bombs don't kill people. People with bombs kill people. Take away their bombs and they will just find another way. Next thing you know the government will be coming for your bombs. When bombs are outlawed, only outlaws will have bombs. [/sarcasm]

This message brought to you by the N.B.A. LOL!

Sorry. Just couldn't pass up a chance to show a nutter what they sound like.

The question isn't "Should we ban instructions on bomb making", the question is, should we surrender even a LITTLE free speech on the net. Do you understand what it means to allow government to have a say on what content is OK to post, and what isn't?

Fact is, the information is out there. To get that information NOT out there, internet wise, would be a pretty huge undertaking, and we wouldn't be any safer from would be bombers after it was all said and done.

A propane tank is a bomb.

Of course. Knowledge, in and of itself is not dangerous. Only people can be dangerous.

BTW, do you have a link to that website? While I have no interest in actually building a bomb (if I did, I wouldn't need that site), it might be interesting to read.

Sorry, I won't search, and would not link to such a website if I knew. The news has been covering a specific website specifically set up by Al Quida for how to make bombs to use and how to use them for terrorism, which appears is where the Boston bombers found their design and made it exactly from, using it exactly as suggested.

I voted no. Since bombs are always illegal without strict permits/Lincense, I believe such websites could be outlawed, banned and removed.

You couldn't PAY me to click on a website like that!

You'd have black S.U.V.'s in your driveway before you know it! Yikes!

Yes, and before this your computer downloaded remotely and everything on it, every keystroke you ever made, plus all emails you ever received or sent via that government data base carefully reviewed.

There are books in the public libraries that will educate you on building bombs. I don't see how knowing how to do something is a problem in any sense. Knowledge is power. Bomb building is just a piece of knowledge that I doubt that I'll ever be using. It's seriously a dangerous business for the bomb builders. The weathermen proved that in the '60s.

Then there were the two unsupervised boys in my neighborhood when I was a kid. They hacksawed a leg off of a kitchen table and filled it with black powder from unrolled fire-crackers and match heads cut from book matches. They put a long fuse through a metal cap, placed the metal cap onto the top of the sawed off metal table leg, and struck it with a metal hammer. After shrapnel removal in the ER they sent them home. They just never could find the thumb and the next two fingers of the boy that was holding the cap in place. That half of his hand is missing too. He likes to keep that two fingered skinny hand in his pocket. I understand why.

I won't be building any bombs, mmmm, probably ever.

Other than mine.

I kind of figure they keep a close tab on such sites. Like the fabled, Anarchist Cookbook site. I say fabled because I have never actually tried to find out if it was real or not.

Actually, I have made soda bottle bombs before and used them to scare away deer and other animals in the fields. Some toilet cleaner, tin foil in a plastic soda bottle, boom. Makes a loud noise like a shotgun going off. But they are probably not very dangerous other than to the person doing them.

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has told investigators his older brother masterminded the attack and they acted on their own without help from any international terror groups.
The seriously injured 19-year-old, communicating from his hospital bed via written notes and head movements, indicated he and his brother Tamerlan, 26, had been motivated by radical Islam but were “lone wolves” who plotted the terrorist atrocity themselves using bomb making instructions found on the internet.

If I wanted to make explosives, I would probably just use my copy of The Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Wouldn't need a website. Now that I think of it, probably need to get a newer copy of that book, mine is kind of old.

as is a case of any aerosol

Bombs have no legitimate use except terrorism and I would ban bomb making instructions.

I guess you live in the part of Idaho that doesn't have trees, either that or you never tried to clear a few stumps without spending the money for a bulldozer.

I've post a couple of things, demonstrating that someone does not need such sites to learn to make bombs. The real reason, other than first amendment rights, for not banning such sites is it gives the government's anti-terrorism branches a means of tracking and identifying individuals who are interested in building bombs and stupid enough to go to such sites. Assuming of course that they really do monitor such sites.

They might have to check out the techno-geeks that just go to find out what they say, but it can give them leads on who is interested in such things and give a possible suspect list if an incident happens. Of course they will probably find another plausible cause for learning about such individuals if needed, confirming, at least to some, that they don't monitor such sites and encourage other idiots to still visit them.

That's pointless and inane. I can quite literally make a bomb out of fricken Bisquick. Give me ten minutes and access to common house hold materials and I can blow a house to the next county. No really special knowledge or instruction required or needed. Just good old fashioned high school chemistry 102. That's the problem with this country, people to busy trying to FEEL safe by throwing away their rights. Fools the lot of em.

With "free speech" comes responsibility....Maybe this should be written into the amendments.....for people sans "common sense" .

I'm sure book burning would follow quickly on the heels of Internet censorship. ;)

If I see a book burning, I am going to get the go pack and make a beeline to nearest exit. I take it as sign the countries gone to hell in a hand basket.

It's bad enough we ban books in the US. :(

It is fairly easy to abduct a child then rape and murder him or her too but I would be for banning sites giving you instructions on how to do it well, how bout you?

Nope. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. What part of Congress shall not do you not understand?
