It will not stop those who are in good standing who snapp and are yet in the database from purchasing a weapon.
All the law does is put another step in for good people to have to go through.

We have laws against robbing a bank, we have laws against assault. Guess what, the laws are not stopping those who wish to rob or beat up someone.

You deminish your stance by the use of gun nut, and saying folks who disagree with you are stupid.
do you honestly believe that leftwingers who constantly whine about guns in the context of crime yet never support laws that actually punish criminals or make criminal activity more risky (such as allowing potential victims to be well armed), really care about crime control or do you think it is more likely that harassing conservative white christian males (ie the stereotypical NRA/GOP member) is what truly motivates them?

have you ever noticed how impervious the anti gun left is to any factual arguments that establish the limitations or outright failures of their cherished gun restrictions to stop crime?

IT IS BECAUSE CRIME CONTROL IS MERELY A FACADE hiding their true motivations

I have said many times that I think Obama is a terrible POTUS.

    http://www.debatepolitics.com/govern...post1061711621

..but on this one, I agree with him.

And other then all the hugging at the end (which may have been a bit much) - I don't see anything remotely un-Presidential in that press conference.

Sounds to me more like rabid gun lovers (as opposed to reasonable gun owners) just have a massive hate on for any POTUS that is not pro-NRA (a group whose leadership I am starting to think is more about representing gun/ammunition manufacturers then anything else).
reasonable gun owners to you being people who won't fight moronic gun laws that are spawned by emotional reactions to tragedies that could not be prevented by said laws?

your psychobabbling attacks on the NRA are just plain stupid

I guess you cannot figure out that imposing more restrictions on second hand sales would actually benefit gun manufacturers

I find it amusing that anti-2nd amendment loons have the nerve to accuse the pro-2nd amendment side of lying and how the anti-2nd amendment side keeps calling this a compromise.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

Thankyou. The 90% does seem very high and it's difficult to believe that if that was correct, your representatives could just ignore that. Surely someone could come up with more accurate figures though. Even though you have a different culture and different laws there than we have here in Australia and Australians have never had a constitutional right to own firearms, the media here has been airing President Obamas response to the Senates rejection. There's been quite a bit of discussion surrounding the 90% figure that's being thrown around.

My understanding from reading some of the threads here from those way more knowledgeable than me on the issue, is that they are not so much opposed to expanding background checks to some degree, but they are worried it could mean one more step toward registration, which they vehemently oppose.

    Here is the issue

the reason why the government can easily punish FFL dealers who DO NOT conduct a background check is for the following reasons

    1) every gun received by a dealer from a wholesaler or a maker is traceable to that dealer
the dealer must record the gun as being received. The ATF knows what guns say Beretta or ACCUSPORT wholesalers have sent to Joe's gun shop and when they inspect that shop, if a gun they know went to the shop is not on the log book, Joe' s license is in trouble

    2) every gun Joe sells must be on a 4473 (or accompanied by the FFL of a dealer he might have sold it to) and that 4473 must have a unique PROCEED code that the NICS background check data center gives JOE after he calls in a background check. IF there is a gun missing and there is no 4473 or a 4473 with no PROCEED CODE-Joe's license is in jeopardy

    3) I , on the other hand, have no duty to keep a record of what I buy or sell. Now say I have a gun my father left me (about 20) and you want say a Browning 30-06 hunting rifle and I decide to sell it to you. There is no record I own that gun now or when I obtained it. Assuming I sell or give it to you and you aren't a government rat, how is the government going to prove that I should have conducted a background check-we will both say it happened in 2011, or 2010 or 2007 .

So the law is doomed to fail and cannot be enforced

and many of us who look to see who is pushing these laws (obama Feinstein, schemer-all of whom want bans and registration) understand that if the law is passed and does not decrease crime (a reasonable assumption given that the brady bill that applies to licensed dealers not only failed to decrease crime (according to several studies including government funded studies by anti gun groups) it was not enforced given that allegedly 2 million people were denied guns (ie they lied on the forms) yet only 277 were prosecuted

There is no tantrum. That was disgust regarding the politicians who caved to a group that sells weapons to terrorists and refused to respect the majority of Americans logical progress and he was angry as he knows we need action.

The NRA lies and that legislation was progress.

Bravo to our President Obama for speaking to us like adults and calling out the politicians who I hope get voted out of office.

terrorists? oh SPARE us the bloodclot drama and hysterics. Your irrational hatred of the NRA (a surrogate for white christian conservative males I suspect) is hilarious

Obama's a turd, he wants armed men with 30 shot magazines to protect him and his minions but he doesn't entrust the rest of us to own them

Only 3 more years of this train wreck.

You should just do what i do. This was the first Obama speech I've listened to since he won the election, and I'm going to go right back to ignoring him until the next election.

I consider Mexican drug lords, people who shoot down elementary students and other crimes of terror as terrorists. The NRA supports those type of weapons and lied so that legislation to make a small step of progress in the right direction.

I support second amendment rights and i supported that legisation and the NRA lied and those politicians will be voted out of office.

    You fail.

    Re: obama's temper tantrum

Alright, let's look at some of the things he stated:

    1. This legislation outlaws the gun registry, and that it was right there in black and white.

That's a straight up, bold-faced lie. Universal background checks mean everyone has to go through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). According to the FBI, "The FFL must record the NICS Transaction Number (NTN) on line 21b of the ATF Form 4473 and retain the form for auditing purposes." Link That's a registry, as it requires a kept record of all gun owners, what firearms they have purchased, and even where they live.

    2. The proposed legislation only upset an "intense minority" of gun owners.

I refuse to believe that Obama is this dense. I can't think of a single gun owner I know who wasn't worried about the effects of this bill. If only an "intense minority" of gun owners were worried, there wouldn't be the vast ammunition shortages, there wouldn't have been the huge outcry against this legislation, not from just the NRA, but from a very large number of gun owners. I don't know the exact numbers, but I would say it was a good bulk of us.

    3. "We can still bring about meaningful change that reduces gun violence"

I'd love to see that, but unfortunately, bans and legislation don't actually do that. In the year that Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (1994), gun violence actually spiked before it declined, and the Federal Assault Weapons Ban did absolutely nothing to prevent the seventeen mass shootings that occurred when it was active. They still haven't figured out that such change comes from within a people, not from forceful legislative action. We need a campaign that teaches people the value of life, not a campaign that persecutes all us dumb rednecks who "cling to [our] guns and religion", while ignoring and sweeping all the underlying issues that are creating these monsters under the carpet.

He did say one thing that's true, though. They won't give up on this effort. They won't ever give up on it, and we need to remain ever-vigilant in order to preserve our Constitutional rights.

I love the NSA. It's like having a secret fan-base you will never see, but they're there, watching everything you write and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that I may be some person's only form of unconstitutional entertainment one night.
