Do you know what "patient dumping" refers to?

This is frightening, and quite sad.

I hadn't heard of this, but I'm not surprised. just one more symptom of our failing health care system. I suppose a mentally ill patient is going to have to kill someone on a bus before anyone cares about it. even then, we won't fix the problem, because the solution will be deemed "socialism."

Yep, I do - and the practice is a lot older than you might think.

It's just a different (and more radical!) form than it took decades ago when hospitals were first required to treat people in the ER. Many hospitals would put people in a taxi and send them over to the nearest shelter or publicly funded hospital. Prior to the 80's it was sometimes done when a hospital admitted a patient then found out their insurance was no good - but many people died in ER parking lots and waiting rooms, too, because the hospital knew right up front they didn't have insurance. This kind of BS is the main reason I stick up for UHC. I've seen first hand what happens when we don't have it and hospitals pick and choose their patients.

We call it "wallet biopsy." I have had patients code while the outside hospital as trying to call transfer report to me. It is truly all about the money and another symptom of a terminally ill healthcare system.

Is that like British ambulances' hospitals of not letting their patients enter the hospital for hours in order to keep the "wait times" down?

Supply and Demand -it turns out, you can't actually legislate it out of existence.

Actually read some nonrightwingnut studies of the British healthcare system. Then compare them to ours.

Yeah, I have done that. I prefer a system where I actually get quality Healthcare, which is why I prefer ours. "Access to a waiting list is not access to healthcare".

I think it is great you have read reliable studies, they are very hard to find without accessing a database from a university or hospital. On the www most everything you try to google takes you to a partisan site where there are a few American conservatives that think they know more than the rest of the world spouting their views. I thought for a second you were gonna start talking about rationing and death panels and stuff...What criteria did the study use to define "held in ambulance?" did it count drive times? hospitals on diversion? were patients ever taken to hospitals that accepted their insurance and how was this time counted? how was this data collected? How does it compare the the US system. That is the cool thing about science, one can look at the data and the study and decide how reliable the findings are.

If you can afford that private hospital or higher priced doctor then go for it - no one is stopping you.
