My thoughts are close. If there would be a connection to NK it would be a rogue actor, someone who would be sympathetic to the country, but considering they don't have a whole lot of sympathizers that is my last thought behind the attack.

Why on earth would you think that? Does that regime really need yet another excuse for the world community, including their allies, to dramatically punish them?

Anybody else with nuclear weapons saying they fully intend to carry out attacks on America would be taken with the utmost seriousness especially considering he's already launched missiles without provocation on a residential neighborhood in South Korea under the argument that the island he attacked is part of North Korea but for some reason when it comes to North Korea some people act like we're supposed to think he's just kidding.
It's the Party and the hardliners probably convincing him that bluster is still the most effective way to get what North Korea wants. There's no real logical reason why the Party would allow or encourage a thoughtless leader to endanger the entire State by actually acting in such a way.

If you want a completely different example, just look at Nikita Khrushchev.

Good point, something I didn't think of. If the party wasn't backing the rhetoric he'd end up in a shallow grave somewhere for potentially endangering the higher ups, not that they care about their citizens but they would want to save their own asses.

That's a huge surprise, Chechnya, Russia, Ukraine, and many of the other former soviet countries are on friendly terms with the U.S. this thing gets weirder and weirder. I have to wonder what made these two tick, they are a bit too young to be soviet communist sympathizers, and the U.S. hasn't done anything to harm Chechnya from my knowledge. This one is a head scratcher.
