    Dividing the United States

In my lifetime, I have never seen a President try to divided a country more than Obama. He campaigned on being the great uniter and ends up being just the opposite. The examples are too numerous to list.

To be honest, lately I've been feeling like it was 1978. Misery index, nuclear whatnot, foreign threats, and no leadership...

What do you think he should be doing about the misery index and nuclear whatnot (and how does that even relate to this thread)?

    Re: Dividing the United States

I don't think the President (any President) is dividing the country. I don't even think that the country is really that divided relative to the historical record. I think the polarization of Congress as an institution, and the advent of the 24 hour news cycle and the age of social media give people the IMPRESSION that the country is divided.

I don't really think the country is all that divided, I think our government is and it is contributing to their failure to govern.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

Curse Obama for going what he thinks is best rather than following a populist agenda!

As far as I can tell, Obama is "dividing" the country by holding political positions that are not always conservative.

So basically the liberal argument is this..

We the people elect the representatives.
We the people are not divided.
The representatives we elect are divided.
