I don't understand why people go in the closet in this day and age, let alone be so allegedly tortured about coming out of it.

I would hazard to guess fear of family reactions more so than friends and/or society.
If you claim sexual harassment to be wrong, yet you defend anyone on your side for any reason,
then you are a hypocrite and everything you say on the matter is just babble.

I have one neice who is gay and appears to have GID, and a few gay friends at work. I figure that's not at all unusual.

My grandmother, to this day, refuses to acknowledge my uncle being gay.

He wasn't incredibly feminine, but he did have the traditional lisp. He grew up in rural Alabama, went off to college, got his degree in accounting (followed his footsteps) at University of Alabama (not in that aspect - I went to a real business school). He eventually got a job in Atlanta and lived up there.

She'll swear to this day that he just had a guy "roommate"...of several years. He wasn't married because "he was so involved in his career". I mean, he was involved in his career, but c'mon...

I am assuming that his teen years were a long time ago. I guess I should have put it more like--I get why old folks did it, but I see no reason for younger people to ever go in the closet to begin with.

Well, I don't think most would be ostracized any more, but I can imagine why it might not be something they want to highlight.

I have gay friends and relatives. I vaguely know a couple transgendered people, but not especially well.

I've known gay people since I was little; my mother was a landlord in Minneapolis, which is apparently now the gayest city in the US.

It always seemed very intuitive to me that they're just regular people and they deserve to have the same rights as other people. I didn't even realize it was a thing until I was in my teens.

No gay relatives. However, I have met a few gay people in my time. One or two of them have been close enough acquaintances to be members of the extended social circle I hang out with at one time or another.

I don't actively seek out gay "friends" due to general awkwardness and discomfort with the idea, but I'm not going to deliberately run them off either.

I have had more gay friends than I could shake my stick at.
