Have you actually met a single tea party activist - in real life, not on TV screen - who gives a hoot about Bachmann or Santorum?

I do not know that to be true
It is absolutely true, for a very simple reason: The Official Tea Party never had existed.

Tea parties are local organizations bound by common goals (fiscal discipline, free-market economics, constitutional rights, truce on "social" and other divisive issues) - a loose (but surprisingly stable) network, not a "party" in the conventional sense. They operate by identifyng and promoting candidates for local and national offices who appear significantly preferable to the alternatives, accroding to their priorities (usually Republicans of a particular kind, a few Democrats in the Rockies, but never their own - the experience of marginalized Libertarian, Reform, etc parties was not lost on them)

This is exactly why the Lefties are going crazy about it. They have no central figure to lash out at.

I think it is pretty convenient the Tea Party has an identity during campaigns and candidates express alliance with TP, then when one says something really whacky, suddenly there is no tea party, it is just a bunch of happy guys that hate taxes.

Yes. But again, small in number. A demonstration may have a few true Tea Party people that accept and understand Tea Party principals and objectives. The others carrying the ‘Don't Tread On Me’ flags don't have a clue what the objectives will mean to them.

I'm not sure what "true Tea Party person" is, but then again, the Tea Party isn't an official party yet is it? I thought it was loosely affiliated but independent groups.
