Should you prove you are a citizen when register to vote? This is about getting your voter registration card, not showing up the polls and presenting birth certificates and certificates of naturalization.

This should be a no brainer.Yes you should have to prove you are a citizen to get a voter registration card.

My Way News - Must voters have to prove citizenship to register?

The Supreme Court will struggle this week with the validity of an Arizona law that tries to keep illegal immigrants from voting by demanding all state residents show documents proving their U.S. citizenship before registering to vote in national elections.

I have no problem with that. If I was in another country I would expect the same.

Re: Should you prove you are a citizen when register to vote?(please read before voti

I honestly don't get the controversy. Can't prove citizenship, can't vote.

No. Why should we discriminate against non-citizens? I'm a little tired of people who seem to think that only citizens should have the right to vote. It's time for that to change once and for all. Those who sneak across the border need representation too.

*Sarcasm just in case ya' missed it.*

Of course, but no need to make it all about sneaky foreigners voting illegally. Perfectly legit citizens casting multiple votes is a much more realistic threat in most places. A photo ID is not too much to ask for, really.

Absolutely

It's not about sneaky foreigners voting illegally, it's about Dems pandering and encouraging illegal votes for the Dems personal benefits.

Multi-votes could be a separate poll.

did those damn dirty Republican try and disenfranchise illegals or something?

citizenship should be required for federal elections (and it is)

I don't really care if the individual states require it or not...they should have the right to determine that for themselves ( and they do)

The SC is going to "struggle" with this? Whew. How do they ever manage to get up each day? Must be a struggle as well.

Good evening, Humbolt.

Judging from the ages of some of them, they probably wonder WHY they even bother struggling! As for the rest of them.....:argue:

Evening to you, as well. I imagine Ruth Ginsberg has to chase her mirror around each morning. Oh, that's cruel. She's not well, which is a damn good reason for her to leave, in my opinion. JUst like Rhenquist, with all those drugs he required. What the hell was he doing serving? I attended the SC as an expert witness back in the 80's. I was tremendously impressed with the intelligence of those folks, but some of them should leave when the writing is on the wall that their run is over. That they continue to stay on because of political reasons is in itself reason enough that they should leave.

Re: Should you prove you are a citizen when register to vote?(please read before voti

Ah, its what they do in every country I've lived in.

Why wouldn't you if it's clearly stated in the constitution that only US citizens can vote?

True that, but the POTUS gets to appoint anyone new. That seems to be a concern for many people....

It is, but I am willing to let Obama replace Ruthy. Who knows? He could end up screwing up, and nominate a justice that would actually vote with the right on something. Once. Maybe.

Well, I've got three words for all those people - especially conservatives and/or libertarians - who think one should "prove" citizenship when you register to vote:

NATIONAL IDENTITY DOCUMENT.

To insure accuracy, there will have to be some usable document for "proof." Birth certificates won't work for naturalized citizens or the many people whose birth wasn't recorded. Drivers' licenses are issued to "green card" holders. Social Security cards are easily forged, and were never intened as an identity document, and passports are both expensive and hardly common in the general public.

So if you really want people to "prove" they are citizens, you'll need a National Identify Card. Just like the ones issued in "every other country I lived in" for those who are familiar with, for instance, Cuba, North Korea and China. Of course, the NID is also a bugaboo of the right, which is understandably concerned that a NID becomes a way to track citizens. It also makes it possible to identify non-citizens, whether for benign reasons or reasons that aren't so nice.

All other reasons to say this is a really stupid idea - making people "prove" their citizenship - sort of pale beside this one.

Anyone wanna show us some tangible evidence of widespread voter fraud?

I dunno. I suspect a lot of frauds voted, if that's any help. I know Obama did.

Canada seems to struggle through without one.

I guess its because they are smart enough to issue citizenship cards to naturalized citizens. If you guys don't, you could try that.

Re: Should you prove you are a citizen when register to vote?(please read before voti

I have to show picture ID when I exercise other rights, (2A for instance). So, I don't find it troubling at all that I should show pic ID to vote...

It's been suggested, but nothing ever happens. Too many people think it reeks of total government control, I guess.

I can see where the SCOTUS may be in a quandary. If they say the law is unconstitutional they are saying non-citizens can vote and if they say the law is constitutional, it may impact some minorities and old people who don't have a birth certificate handy or other papers to prove they are a citizen. From personal experience, I say go for it Arizona.

My wife who hadn't passed her citizenship test yet, was still a citizen of Thailand then. She went to renew her drivers licence and was asked if she wanted to register to vote. Not understanding the question and coming from a country where you usually do not say no to the police, she said yes. Now here she is registered to vote and not even a citizen. She never voted, but she could have. She is now a U.S. citizen and still doesn't vote.

I think we blew past that total government control sign with the ACA. It's odd that people should get concerned about this issue with regard to voting, yet ignore it everywhere else.

So, when you become a citizen, what?, they shake your hand and nothing? Hey, even immigrants, legal ones anyway, get a green card.

:agree: But the ACA was an anomoly that required bribes and threats to pass, and that was from their own party! The Repubs voted no, but it did squeek by. Only now are we being made aware of how costly it may be, contrary to the promises made by BHO and others. :(
