Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Against SSM? If family member came out to you, would you change your mind?

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

I didn't intend to be condescending; I just wanted you to stop hounding me when I wasn't even talking to you and when you clearly want to minimize facts you don't like by using the term "extreme minority."

My apologies. I know you weren't talking to me, but I disagreed with your post a little, so I responded to it.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Thank you for being gracious.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Anyone who is against gay marriage is (imo) either middle aged or older and/or too religious and/or below average in intelligence.

Btw - I am 'straight'.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

In light of Rob Portman's change of heart regarding gay marriage, if your son/daughter/brother/sister came to you and told you they were gay, would you, could you see yourself changing your stance?

I don't really know Rob Portman that well so I can't speak to him. I will say that my sister coming out (she came out to me first, actually) did not change my belief system, and I don't really understand why it would change anyone else's, unless your beliefs were dictated to you by emotion in the first place.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

I was against gay marriage and still am as far as my religious beliefs go. It is a sin and I will never recognize it as anything real or tangible. I however do realize that equal treatment under our secular law is to important. The sin is between them and God, as it is for all as I am a sinner as well. So I support SSM even though I will never recognize it as being under God.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

ill never understand why anybody is against equal rights

and while its great that rob was able to see what the right and proper thing to do was once a person close to him was effected thats the way ALL AMERICANS should think.

Its said so many of them only care about themselves and their opinions and dont care about the rights, liberties and freedoms of others.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

ill never understand why anybody is against equal rights
It isn't an equal rights issue.
It is creating a new right.

And frankly, spare me the reply that it is an old an tired argument. It isn't. It is as valid as when it was first made.
The right they want created doesn't exist for anybody.

With very few exceptions (showing that it is really a privilege and not a right) everybody is currently allowed to marry someone of the opposite sex. Regardless if you actually love them or not.

The fact that gays (in general) can't accept this shows disrespect for the actual institution of union called marriage.
Even though they too can engage in said union with someone of the opposite sex it doesn't matter to them.
They want to be able to have a union for those of the same sex which isn't marriage.
So instead they want to create a new right.
I have no problem with that. Create a new right where anybody can form a union with another of the same sex. Just give it another name.
Trying to take the name marriage and the terms associated with it, is just disrespectful.

Yeah, like i said most will never reach the empathy stage, and this is why i don't care to win over the opinions of bigots. Support it or don't. The court will decide this and the social war outside shanty small towns and the deep south has ended anyway. Opposition is irrelevant.

You have done no such thing, nor has anyone else. You thinking you have, is ridiculously hilarious.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Since I have never felt that I deserved rights that others couldn't have I wouldn't need to change my stance.

Change is coming.

Don't think so?

Wait and see.

No one can stop time and/or change.

If anything that I have said on this post steps on anyone's toes, excuse me very much.

For everyone in the USA to have equal rights, some people will have to join the reality based world, whether they like it or not.

That's just the way it is.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Absolutely not. I support gay marriage, even it is my close relative who has to suffer.:2razz:

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Still, it's how progress works I guess.

It shouldn't have to be that way, but for some people that's just the way that it is.

I'm certainly not going to attack Senator Portman because that's what it took to change his mind.

I give the man a little credit for accepting reality, some people will never get past that point.

He happens to be one GOPer that I had some respect for before this came out.

Seems like a fairly decent guy to me.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Marriage should NEVER be a political issue and especially not at the federal level.

It should not, but it is, and at the federal level: a gay couple cannot obtain a fiance visa, for example.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

It isn't an equal rights issue.
It is creating a new right.

In the narrowest technical sense, yes. But isn't it a bit like saying that women's right to vote isn't an equal rights issue?

Men always voted, women never did; "universal suffrage" meant the right of male citizens to vote, regardless of property, literacy, race or religion. Allowing women to do it as well was "redefining voting" and "creating a new right". But common sense tells you that it was, obviously, an issue of equality.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

In the narrowest technical sense, yes. But isn't it a bit like saying that women's right to vote isn't an equal rights issue?
I disagree as it was only male citizen allowed to vote. So it was discriminatory.

Marriage on the other hand allows both males and females to join. It does not discriminate as each are allowed to fully participate in a union with a person of the opposite sex. Loving was shown to be discriminatory because it did not allow a male to join with a female.

Male/Male, female/female marriage didn't exist. It is creating a new right, and as such should be given it's own name. Not take that which belongs to another. It is disrespectful as the unions are not the same in all regards.

I see your point.

Sometimes a man has to do (Or not do.) what a man has to do (Or not do.).

We just have to continue to try to change the world one person at a time.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Okay, so they're probably an extreme minority. So what?

If there were two gay people in the USA would you want to deny them the same rights that you have?

Why?

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Anyone who is against gay marriage is (imo) either middle aged or older and/or too religious and/or below average in intelligence.

How many Catholic priests, bishops, cardinals with doctorates in theology and other fields do you think are below average in intelligence?

Just curious.

If more religious people would think like you we would have way fewer problems.

Same sex marriage will eventually be the law in the USA, no matter what the pope or anyone else thinks.

The vast majority of young people support it and I believe that they will outlive those who are against it.

Do the math.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

I disagree as it was only male citizen allowed to vote. So it was discriminatory.

Marriage on the other hand allows both males and females to join.

But only with the opposite sex. Those who have no interest in the opposite sex cannot marry at all, in practical terms. Just like allowing women to vote meant "redefining of universal suffrage", accomodating these people requires "redefining of marriage".

What would you say about a law that states: everbody has the right to join chess clubs, whether they play chess or not, but not macramé clubs - because it doesn't fit our current definition of "club" (And macramé is so gay)?

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Some people say that it's because those who oppose equal rights think that if everyone has the same rights that they have, their rights will not be worth as much.

I am not buying that idea.

It's all about hate.

Those who oppose equal rights for any group of people, hate those people.

That's it in a nutshell.

Re: Portman. For those members against gay marriage:

Last time I checked, the word "marriage" was not patented by anyone.

In principle, I agree: let's have "civil unions" for everyone, and leave "marriage" (holy matrimony) for churches. But no opponent of gay marriage I've heard of had ever promoted such solution on the legislative or even rhetorical level. Why not?

thats what i thought you got nothing LMAO
you have been thoroughly exposed

I have stated facts and posted "nu-huh" thats brilliant LMAO

fact is gay marriage already exist you cant change that
its already been proven to be an equal rights issue

let me know when you can defeat these facts with anything other than your hurt feelings and opinion

soon equal gay rights will be national, just the way it is an d it will be a great day because america will have again fixed and inequality, further protected equal rights and rid ourselves of some more discrimination.

so lets recap, gay marriage already exsists and has before we were ever born so you are wrong trying to push your OPINION that it doesn't, if you disagree FACTUALLY prove otherwise, you will fail as usual
it is about equal gay rights and this has also been proven, if you disagree factually rove otherwise, i cant wait.

:)
