Obama declaring due to the sequester (which limited how much the federal government can increase it's budget this year) that White House tours have to be canceled. This reminds of the historic Jimmy Carter declaring the White House Christmas Tree would not be lite due to a gasoline shortage - although electricity doesn't come from gasoline.

Does the stunt of the President declaring the government is too broke for White House tours remind you of Jimmy Carter's stunt of not lighting the White House Christmas tree? Is this the same stupid kind of stunt by a President?

I think the outrage displayed by the cons on this topic IS a political stunt. We have more important things to worry about than some trivial tourist tours.

It is starting to look like a stunt - that will no doubt backfire and expose them as even bigger fools already.

In this context, the word "trivial" would mean anything that makes Obama look like he's throwing a childlike tantrum?

Maybe Obama is using this as an excuse to not have to keeping hiding from people while smoking Malboro Reds? Or is it Kool menthols?

No doubt his main objective is to have the republican party do a major FAIL!

and It seems to be working like a charm.

Yes, defeating the Republicans is what matters, not the country.

LOL, they are doing it to themselves. They need no assistance.

Can you say "47%" for a start.

Can you say "the Obama-Romney election was last year?"

I find myself almost never agreeing with your sentiments on virtually any topic, and while I don't believe the so-called "outrage displayed" is solely on the part of "cons", I do strongly agree with you that when your country and its President are posting $1 trillion plus deficits now and into the future and $16 trillion, racing to $20 trillion, debt, there is little need to feel any emotion at all at the loss of a few weeks or more of White House tours. One has to wonder, by the way, just how much tour guides are paid and how many Secret Service agents have to twiddle their thumbs to accommodate these tours in the first place to make it a significant cut to implement at this time.

Of course we dont agree and just about everything. We are on opposite ends of the spectrum. However, Im really dumbfounded that the cons are anti-money saving.
Here, we have a president that is doing what he can to eliminate/curb spending, and you guys poopoo it.

Ok, perhaps the outrage is coming from the "libertarians" as well.

I do love puppies and kittens. Im sure you do too. Perhaps we can agree on that.

I love all animals - I'm a dog person, so I have a preference - but I've never met an animal I didn't like and at least enjoy watching if interaction isn't a natural thing for them. I love and respect all forms of life - I'm a bit of a hypocrite though, in that most food I eat comes from some form of life animal/plant - I'm just glad I don't have to be the one to actually "process" the animal kind or I'd starve to death.

On the more topical point - If you're proud of your President for finally taking a stab at cutting spending by cutting out some White House tours, imagine how overjoyed you'd be if he actually worked with congress to initiate some meaningful, structural, long term cuts that put your country back on a sustainable path. I might even give him props if that happened.

I suppose if this was just one of many things Obama
cancelled in an effort to save money it would not be a stunt. But since this is the only cost cutting measure he has announced (AFAIK) it is clearly nothing more than a childish reaction to not getting his way.

Ok, this is where we disagree. Im more of a cat person :2wave:, but im still a sucker for dogs. I, too am a hypocrite when it comes to food.

In general, i have never been OVER ALL proud of any president (have any of us?). There are things that im glad my president has done and there are things that i didnt care for. Im sure both sides want to work with one another, but things are so politically crappy right now that i dont think we'll ever see both sides work together again (with any future presidents as well)

It's not the only cost cutting that has been made. ICE did release many immigrants from prison.

Since you bring up the release of illegals, I'm curious - couldn't the President grant a pardon to all those currently in prison on non-violent, drug possession convictions and in that way greatly reduce the cost of incarceration in America?

That, i agree upon. I havent seen any indication that he wants non-immigrants released. However, im not sure if he gave the "word" to release any prisoners. I do know that ICE, a government agency, made the move to release them. Did Obama have a say in this? I truly dont know. Im not sure just how much power ICE has. Hell, it could be a republican tactic to stir up controversy in letting the immigrants go. Im not really sure who is in charge of ICE.

Frankly I could care less about their tours.

If I could legally carry concealed during my time in DC, and during the WH tour, then I would go!

I don't blame Obama specifically for the release, although there are memos floating around out there that indicated White House operatives were encouraging agencies to make their cuts hurtful to the public or at least controversial - these releases, however, were done prior to the sequester coming into force. I could be wrong, but I believe Napolitano is the Cabinet Secretary with responsibility over ICE and she claimed to know nothing about the release beforehand.

You see, that's the thing, no one really knows. The left media says "this" and the right media says "that".

Oh, lots of people in the administration know the answer and likely many in the media may also know "unofficially" but neither is too interested in letting the public know exactly what's happening.

Riiiight! ICE doesn't report to anyone, but are permitted to do what they want without questions from higher-ups? C'mon! :(

I very strongly disagree.

The White House tours were a very big deal, for years, for buses of schoolchildren visiting DC. Why hurt the children the Dems care so much about...when it comes to funding the unions for education, apparently, but not seeing history firsthand? I suggest that using some of the money we're funneling overseas to countries that hate us could be better spent on White House tours!

I strongly suspect it may be a political stunt. Especially when they approve $250 million to send over to Egypt.

I fear Obama may be wanting to make cuts where they will be visible and directly impacting towards citizens as a political move. I wouldn't put it past him.
