No, absolutely not (I don't claim to be a mental health expert) - however, my doctors and therapists (and I have seen - over the years, mind you - the best in the country) agree with me on this..... Look, I suggest you re-read Goshin's post (and carefully) - for it is, for the most part, right on. The key here is, of course, letting the DOCTORS make the decision, NOT the client....

I'd be cautious about giving the docs too much subjective judgement authority. I'd prefer a set of objective standards with modest wiggle room and an appeals process in case one shrink isn't being reasonable.

Yes, with a qualifier. No if they have ever been convicted of any violent crime or are ineligible for a driver's license.

Driving a automobile is not a right it is a privilege given by the State. Possession of a firearm is a right that can only be severed by a court action. Anyone who has a mental illness that would severely distort a person's view of reality should not have access to firearms.

Point well taken and appreciated....

Always someone out there whom knows more than me - or rather, can help me see things from a different angle. Once again, I think you are right.

I'll admit that this is difficult to determine (we need better psychologists)..
Non-lethal is the answer.
Lethal weapons for our police....this is where I feel the England is wrong..
And plenty of ammo and weapons for our hunters, plus open season on deer.

I don't know.......some people are ticking time bombs ready to go off......How do you account for them?

The problem is my friend you don't know when one of these guys will lose it and go off the deep end......then it is to late.

You want government to take away the Constitutional right of anyone who has had the smallest mental issue?? When did you become so anti-gun, my left-wing friend?

So you, of all people, want the government to walk down the line and decide who does and doesn't get guns? Really?

Who said anything about the government doing it? Please don't put words in my mouth my left wing friend....thanks.

Every right comes with certain responsibilities so that the right is not abused for evil purposes such as the right to bear arms.

Just because you have that right does not allow you to commit acts of violence.

No right is absolute.

I own 4 guns including a WW1 45 caliber pistol......I thnk that answers your doubt on me and gun control.

Oh and if I called you left wing I apologize......You are
truly not left wing.

Ahahahahaha, now you're calling people left wing for opposing gun legislation. You're really all over the place. I knew I could count on you for a laugh.

Citizens can't use force to take guns away, I don't know what kind of magical situation you're imagining. Citizens walking around saying "I'm seizing your guns using my citizen powers"?

It's always the state using force.

I say (emphatically) no - at least, not until they are pronounced 100% well and sane by a qualified psychiatrist. Just tired of hearing about mentally ill individuals shooting up schools/theaters, etc.

Thoughts/opinions?

No.

....

Are there any particular criteria you had in mind to define "mentally ill"?

I would just ask if they are regular contributers to the conspiracy theory section of debatepolitics.com.

Thank you Captain Obvious. :2razz:

I am always amazed by your posts my left wing friend and you better believe the people who are for gun control are lefties like you.

I am proud to be for gun control.

I love disipline and order.

I think it depends. Not all crazy people are threat to the safety of others.

It does, I think, certainly depend on the severity of the symptoms/illness (as we have discussed previously in this thread)....

Here is something I want everyone to think about, however: If you had (say) a son whom was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or severe depression AND was living with you - Would you (if you had guns in the house) keep your guns locked up, or leave them unlocked and in plain sight all the time? I already know how I would answer that, but this isn't really about me or my opinion.....

Just something to chew on a little bit - hitting the hay now, but I'll most likely be back here tomorrow (God willing).....

You kids play nice in the meantime. ;)

Define mentally ill, what if someone pays someone off in order to get somebody declared ill, and what if they use politics or faith as a reason? I have mild autism, which is NOT a mental illness, but under some laws people want I couldn't own a gun, when I own and shoot regularly.

Autism (especially mild autism) is not a psychiatric disorder, but rather (from my understanding) a neurological one.... Look, I'm on your side here. I have no further comment about autism or any other neurological disorder at this point - as that, perhaps, belongs in another thread....

Just be careful. What if you accidently shoot someone?

Seeing as how you've stated multiple times in this thread that you are pro-gun control, and I am not. I guess you've decided to come out to the world in this thread as a leftist?

And tell me, under what authority are civilians going to be disarming the "crazies" if the government won't be doing it, as you've stated?

I am proud to be for gun control.

Discipline and order? That's what you call the government and thugs having all the guns while the average Joe has a baseball bat? What does neutering the average citizen's protective power have anything to do with discipline and order? Will you be conducting mandatory formations and training in order to instill discipline?
