Does carrying a gun increase your sense of empowerment?

I'm not particularly pro or anti gun and have no dog or hidden agendas in this fight. I have no desire to slander gun owners or paint them in any negative light; and I introduce this thread with this disclaimer because like many hot button topics any one perceived position is likely to be encountered by a polar extreme, an easy example being the Middle East and Abortion forums.

I'm just curious.

at first in my head i answered no, carring a gun does nothing like that for me BUT

then i looked up the word and saw definition number two lol

em·pow·er

verb /emˈpou(-ə)r/
empowered, past participle; empowered, past tense; empowering, present participle; empowers, 3rd person singular present

1.) Give (someone) the authority or power to do something
- nobody was empowered to sign checks on her behalf

2.) Enable (someone) to do (something)
- cryptography will empower individuals to control their information

3.) Make (someone) stronger and more confident, esp. in controlling their life and claiming their rights
- movements to empower the poor

i wasnt aware of the number two definition in such a general sense

but again, i still dont know how to answer because its not a feeling or a sense its just a fact.

carrying a gun ENABLES me to be MORE capable to protect me and mine.

Does carrying a gun increase your sense of empowerment?

Because empowered is a word used politically. Do you feel 'safer', 'more secure' .. these things make sense. 'Empowered' is just a left wing trap.

It is a left wing trap word for women and blacks now too? Hm.

It is only a trap word if you make it.

carrying a gun makes me more confident to protect my family who might be in harms way......Make no mistake about it if attacked I would shoot first and ask questions later..........I will do whatever it takes to protect my family in this nutty world we live in today.

I agree, I have a scar on my right hand where I was forced to defend myself 22 years ago in Memphis. If I had been carrying then as I do now, I would be without the scar and that guy would not ever attacked anyone again.

does he have children? it's curious that you think avoiding the scar would be worth orphaning kids, yet you haven't had laser surgery to remove the scar. has he attacked anyone again? if he hasn't, then a gun wouldn't have prevented it.

He has, he stabbed me with a 6" blade that was aimed for my chest. That mother****er deserved to die but all I could give him was a concussion and put my foot on his throat until the cops arrived.

Dumbasses like that are no good to any children they have and what does that say about you?

It says a lot about you. You probably laid a hand on one of his kids, instigating the incident. I notice you didn't claim that he ever attacked anyone else.

I was walking back from Beale street to the hotel and he his intent was to rob me. Based on your comment above it is nice to know that trashy people side with other trashy people turning this country into one big landfill.

Or the people who think the gun in their purse/belt is going to stop a mugger/rapist who is 10 feet away. Trained police officers have a 21-foot rule for the "gun vs knife" scenario, and some think 30 feet is more realistic. In the time it takes for a trained officer to pull a gun from a holster (a device designed for convenient gun access, incidentally, unlike a bloody purse), aim, and fire accurately, an attacker can cross 21-30 feet. A surprised civilian? Hell, I'm a freaking couch potato and I'm crossing half a football field before you get the gun out of your purse, lady. Waistband gun guy? Hell I don't even need a weapon, you'll probably shoot yourself trying to scramble the thing from underneath your jacket.

Everybody thinks they're ****in Rambo.

When I trained people, I trained when to display/go for your firearm and when not to do so. For officers I trained, it was on the single topic of demonstrating when not to.

Where firearms save lives, prevent assaults and prevent crimes is 1.) NOT in surprise close attacks but when a sense of danger is in play, 2.) to an evolving worsening situation and 3.) when a person senses danger and displays a firearm in response to it.

As my sig. line points out, the presence of a firearm avoids upwards of a million crimes a year. No shots fired. That is THE best reason to have a firearm of all - it avoids anything happening at all.

However, to try to reverse it and claim because a firearm will not protect a person in 100% of situations therefore proves a firearm never serves a protective purpose is just false. Now and then I present when a person having a firearm - and shooting - saved innocent people's lives. Yet many times over, no shot fired at all prevents a crime, an assault or saves a life. That usually is in relation to an assailant, intruder etc who does not have a firearm but does have a weapon or is just greatly physically stronger. However, sometimes the assailant/intruder is armed with a firearm and still repelled.

The video is on the topic of NOT waiting until a firearm is shown by "the bad guy" to draw or even to shoot.

I caught hunters on my land once who claimed they didn't see any no trespassing signs. I escorted them back along their tracks in the snow where they entered my land with a bright orange sign in their face. I had my shotgun and when we got to the sign I pointed it at them and told them to lean their rifles on the tree and start walking up the trail to the road. I then made them sit cross legged for nearly two hours until the cops got there. If I had no gun they would have told me to go f*** myself when we hit the sign and laughed as they walked away.Yes guns empower.

What you did actuallys strikes me as particularly illegal - assuming you're not a cop and depending upon which state.

"Don't move" for 2 hours holding a shotgun on them for trespassing? Anyone reading this should NOT follow that course of action.

People like you are the reason I have a gun. It's too bad your life was never in danger, some guy with a paring knife, enough weaker than you that you can subdue him barehanded. You think everyone else but you is trash, it's all in the eye of the beholder. You carry a gun because you believe everyone else's life is worth less than yours, and you're hoping for another opportunity where you are able to subdue a guy with your bare hands, so that next time you can shoot the guy you were able to subdue with your bare hands, and call it self defense instead of what it is, ugly hate.

Hate is someone that would approach a law abiding citizen on the street to rob, inflict injury, and leave them for dead preventing them from ever seeing their family again. People like you is why pieces of **** continue to do this without serious reprecussions. You should start visting prisons on Sunday and help rehabilitate these fine men you seem so fond of, maybe as a bonus you can work in a few conjugal visits for a few more. I am sure they would appreciate your efforts.

how dare you defend yourself... you should have laid down and died for that poor poor man with the knife.. he might have kids !

funny how politics will cause people to side with violent criminal predators eh?

I know, it is disgusting. I provide for my family by working yet some people here cheer people that try to kill others to support theirs and then they complain about guns when the real issue is behavior.

you have a gun because of victims of violent crime?.... and utterly wierd thought process you have there.

I dunno. it seems as though you have a certain fondness for the criminal .. and are showing quite a bit of hate for the victim here.....why is that?

well, i suggest ignoring such peoples yammering and keep on living a good honest life.. but if you really want their respect, it seems that turning to a life of violent crime will do the trick.

he did defend himself and i didn't criticize him for doing it, i criticized him for wanting to go back and do it again, and this time kill the guy just for fun, just because he's full of hate. . funny how you think lying is okay when politics are involved, huh? funny how he doesn't approve of having successfully defended himself, he wants to go back and do it differently just in case he missed an opportunity to orphan some kids. clearly he's opposed to defending himself, since he did defend himself and he's far from satisfied. funny how hateful people always use the right to bear arms to justify being hateful, huh? oh by the way he thinks everyone he disagrees with him is trash and he's the garbageman, i can almost guarantee that you don't agree with him on all the political issues. sleep well tonight.

You are the perve that accused me of messing with his kids, the hate came from you nowhere else.

he successfully defended himself from a minor robbery, beat the crap out of the guy, and wishes he could go back in time and kill the guy. he's not a victim, he's a man who, by his own admission, walks around hoping to be a victim so he can have an excuse to kill someone if he ever has another chance to just beat the crap out of a guy instead of killing him. you really should get a gun yourself in case you ever meet this evil guy, so that if he ever has the chance to beat the crap out of you and opts to shoot you instead, you can pull a gun first and survive.

Another lie posted by you, show us where I stated I hoped I could be robbed and stabbed again. I am totally against abortion but your lying along with your thought process is making me seriously consider rethink that.

you did a horrible job selling your story....none of it was compelling.

when/if a stranger pull a knife on you... please, ask him about his kids....and make sure not to hate him.
not much more I can say to you.

I agree with no one on every issue... not even myself.;)

i've been carrying for over 40 years....the criminals on the street i've come into contact with smartened up real quick.
were I not armed, things may not have gone so well for me

I have zero problem with killing violent predators in self defense.... not a single problem at all.

his "minor robbery" resulted in a stab wound...and no many how many words you type, you will not get me to champion the violent criminal over the victim.... it's futile for you to try.
