They could hardly be across the board cuts if they excluded a good half of the budget...

Then you misunderstood my vote and most likely many others as well. The July 2011 deal included military spending cuts on purpose to push the GOP into negotiations instead of just waiting for the changes they wanted anyway. So, the reason military spending should continue to be included is to, again, spur the GOP into doing the right thing and negotiating, which they have pretty much failed to do since at least July 2011 when this whole circus started. I think defense spending is very important but obviously the Republicans don't think it's worth the trouble.

Health care reform cuts the growth of medicare spending by $700 billion over 10 years, and the president supports extending SS retirement age to 70 and changing the way cost of living increases are computed with the effect of reducing future payments.

Why did Republicans vote unanimously last year to continue spending this year almost as much as the rest of the world combined on the military?

Absolutely not, I was talking with a friend who is a historian with what I consider an inordinate interest in military matters and even he admits we have to slash a major portion of the military budget to survive. We just don't need a military that large!
