I think the questions should include... "Under the Influence while engaging with patients".

As it is...there are probably a lot of doctors who use a vast number of drugs during the course of their practice, including alcohol. So my main concern is...are they using while practicing medicine during the course of their regular work day?

If so...then it's more than "regular use". It would be abusive use or dependent use.

I would have no problem at all with it, provided that they are not working while intoxicated. I see little difference between a doctor who has scotch after work or smokes a bit of pot - and in some circumstances i would rather they did pot than the scotch (for example - if they drank excessively the previous night and came in with shaky hands for surgery).

So long as they use responsibly and it does not affect them during work hours I do not care what they do outside of work.

And actually, when you think about it, we are all powerless, for the most part, over other peoples behaviors. Most of us have a hard enough time keeping up with our own.

    Really depends.

Are they a good doctor? How much is "regular?"

I know a lot of people who smoke a couple times a month -- maybe once every weekend. They smoke the same way a lot of people have a couple drinks, and the effect and social goals are very similar. It's just a way they chill out. It doesn't affect their functioning.

Every day? No. But I wouldn't go to a doctor who was drinking every day either. Someone who relies on mind-altering and motor impairing chemicals to get through the day shouldn't be practicing medicine, whether it's booze or weed or whatever else.

No it shouldn't. I would presume pretty much everyone would answer "no" to going to a doctor who they knew was under the influence.

As long as they kept smoking on their personal time...I would have no issue.

    But hey, that's me.
The thing is, casual marijuana use doesn't have "obvious and serious side effects." It doesn't impair you any worse than alcohol, and the effects of heavy long-term use are debatably less. I don't see any reason why, if you would go to a doc who drank once in a while, you wouldn't go to one who smoked weed once in a while.
