Not inherently, no. There are lots of stupid laws, and the majority of us break some of them every single day. Most of us will have committed a felony or two by the time we hit middle age.

I am not swayed by the argument that the law must always be followed simply because it's the law. Of course, people should accept the possibility that they will be punished for ignoring such laws, but doing so is not implicitly wrong.

I just have a hard time thinking of what people do to their own bodies during their down time as "wrong."

Yeah, I mean you have a lot to fear there. The doc may mistake your pancreas for a twinkie

Unless it affects his performance on the job, why should I care what my doctor does in his spare time?

How could it affect his performance?

Do I care if my doctor drinks the night before? No. Do I care if my doctor drinks so much that he has a hangover while seeing me? Yes.

With all due respect XF...I think that my full post would have added more clarity as to "under the influence" comment".

As it is...there are probably a lot of doctors who use a vast number of drugs during the course of their practice, including alcohol. So my main concern is...are they using while practicing medicine during the course of their regular work day?

If so...then it's more than "regular use". It would be abusive use or dependent use.

I use to smoke pot "REGULARLY" for a number of years. That sometime meant from the time I got up...till the time I went to bed. That often included my work hours and personal time. I'm not a doctor by the way. At any rate, that's my personal view of "REGULARLY".

BTW...it's been over 25 years since I smoked pot. But I don't see any problem with anybody, regardless of their profession, who indulges responsibly and not during times where it might impair his or her judgment that might result in the injury or death of themselves or others.

Why are you telling me about your feelings on drinking? I didn't ask about that.

Can marijuana effect judgment? I'm told being high is better and safer than being hungover.

Almost everybody breaks at least 1 law everyday...knowingly.

    Speeding.
    Improper use of seat belts.
    Not signalling appropriately.
Going a day or two over on registration/inspection.
    Downloading a song online.
    Downloading a discography, even!
Not picking up the dog's poo 'cause it was kind of runny and it's raining.
    etc., etc., etc.

Nobody is a moral absolute. Why do we hold a doctor to a higher standard than a cashier? Perhaps the issue of judgment is too broadly applied here. Why should we be concerned about their judgment in terms of our care based upon the fact that they break a law, particularly when the breaking of that law does not intentionally or willfully cause harm to another (as opposed to say, a doctor that rapes women in his spare time)?

Pot, alcohol, and a list of chemicals a mile long are considered to be "MIND ALTERING" chemicals. I would associate "mind altering" with "impaired judgment"...and the degree will vary from person to person.

At some point in time during the course of a day...I was usually hung over while high on pot...or another chemical or two...so I can't answer that for most people.

Being high...and being hung over....I don't see them as a compatible comparison, although I'm sure that each carry a risk of some kind.
