In England we are still enrolling young men..there are stalls on nearly every market trying to impress them..

A lot of lowly paid workers join up..it is either that or a life on basic wages..

I have asked them why they joined up...not one of them said ''it's to protect freedom'' or ''to put wrong right''

Every last one of them told me it was for the money...

Blindly following orders or even questioning the orders but choosing to follow those orders is still a choice of the individual and I do not give them a pass just for being patriotic. They can of course make whatever decision they feel is right but that does not mean I will support them in it. Myself I believe every major military campaign we have been in the last 60 has not been about protecting our nation but instead was politically driven by greed or lust for power. These I cannot support.
They don't always have that choice. You forgot about Selective Service.

Again, NOT a simple yes or no thing.
If our troops are committing atrocities, then NO; but its their leaderships responsibility to handle this.
Otherwise - YES, our military represents us, and, they do a fine job of it..
It boils down to the quality of our president, IMO, from 2001 to 2009 it was not very good.
A "yes" vote is closer to the truth, we should, we MUST support our troops (they are us), BUT the leaders (congress, Presidents are not always worthy).

At least they are honest and truthful, which is a lot more than I can say about some others(conservatives).

This is a hell of a situation...but what to do ?
Life must be a lot more than a "bummer".
Are opportunities in short supply ?
    Is the future bleak ?
Whose responsibly is ones happiness ?? (it cannot all be on the one man)...IMO.
Our government also has its job.

In other words, troops can judge the morality of their actions. If they are doing something immoral, I don't buy the argument that they are unaccountable because someone else told them to do it.
    A good point.
IMO, the "someone else" is the responsible party.
    War itself is immoral.
Buts its the King Georges, Hitlers, and many other scum, who commit atrocities.

Re: Should We Always Support the Troops?

The Vietnam War was in its entirety an immoral war. We participated in it with immoral reasons. It was also immoral, in many individual cases, some infamous. In a few individual cases it is a few troops that do immoral things that are supported by low level leadership, this happens in war. But what we did to Vietnam at the end of WWII for the French was seriously immoral. It’s not the troops except in a few small cases. It’s our culture and, as a result, our leadership that is immoral, which in a Democracy our responsibility.

bty, I was drafted in '68, and spent 4 years in the USAF. One year in SEA.
