Nonsense.

Good afternoon, CJ.

We also provide most of their funding...does that make it our duty to see that they continue? We only have one vote, the same as any much smaller country, some ruled by dictators or worse, so where is the fairness in that? We are facing a fiscal cliff...let the other countries kick in more in return for the privilege of voting against America's interests in many cases! :(

I wouldn't mind if they had anything that vaguely resembles a standing army, or could say something they had a shot in hell of backing up.

When I think of the UN, I think of a bunch of talking heads who get together every so often and whine about things they can't stop. It's like a Republican convention.

Really? And you would then have no problem if the US had US soldiers under their command?

I assume you meant UN for the first US...if so, I would have no problem whatsoever.

Hell, I'd encourage it. Maybe other countries could learn by osmosis.

Hi Lady P - hope all is well today.

Canada pays the seventh highest amount in annual dues to the UN, and this doesn't count numerous peace keeping missions and other foreign aid we pay out through UN agencies and we constantly get bad mouthed by the worst actors in the world. Many countries continue to vote while not paying their required dues. I'd love to see Canada withdraw - it angers me that our membership validates this disgrace.

They have become little more than a mouthpiece for tin horn dictators and terrorists.

Now, Now, Lizie. Don't you think you are selling them a bit short, here? They are much more than that.

Their accomplishments in the field of sex trafficking of underage girls sure can't be overlooked, don't you think?.

Interesting and not what I would have expected.

Why not? I don't think an independent (reasonably) international body would intentionally put our boys in harm's way - and I'm guessing most of their missions would be along the line of peacekeeping. They wouldn't openly declare war, and they wouldn't be led by anyone remotely considered despotic.

Good afternoon, Gipper.

Well, since we have been here since the Constitution was voted on some 200 plus years ago, osmosis clearly isn't working! Invading or droning other countries hasn't made us real popular either.

Any other suggestions? :)

American soldiers have been unwelcomed because they represent American policy. If they were delegated to the command of the UN, I doubt they'd carry the same light as troops receiving orders issued from Washington D.C.

Also, do you really think the United Nations would invade another country for any purpose other than liberation?

Oh...and good afternoon.

In what parallel mathematical universe does 22% constitute 'most'? The US is the largest single contributor to the UN, or at least it would be if it actually paid its contribution. Often it does not.

Good afternoon, Andrablue.

I am math-challenged, I admit, but since there currently 192 nations in the UN, and we are contributing over a fifth of their revenue, that equals most to me. It appears that some of the other non-West 191 nations only have to pay a pittance to have their vote count the same as ours. Now I understand being "equal," but the only equality I see here is the voting right, and I think that's unfair, especially since a lot of them neither understand nor agree with our form of governance to begin with! :(

After the North Korean nuclear test yesterday the UN "strongly condemned" it according to CNN. Personally this irked me because if North Korea was willing to come this far, to simply condemn them is not going to reach the goal that the UN wants. I want to know what you all think about the UN and it's workings. Please explain.

It is difficult for the UN to be that much better than its members...
And it is disturbing that so many here want to see it gone....much as the conservatives were able to kill off the League of Nations..
Will they ever learn ??

The essential purpose of the United Nations is to transfer money from 1st world countries to the corrupt leaders of 3rd world countries. Why are they in New York? They are there for the limousine, prostitute, expensive hotel and restaurant lifestyle. You couldn't pry those America haters out of New York with a crowbar.

The UN also seems to be a platform for globalist loons like Clinton and Obama who envision themselves as president of the entire world.
Only your opinion (thank God), Ray
Think about this, Ray
Why are there some "American haters" ?

1. I seriously doubt our military would consent to being under any other command than ours. Why should we? Until recently we have been the big kid on the block.

2. "Liberation" from one despot to another despot hasn't worked out too well for the citizens of some countries recently, either, if violent clashes and riots are any indication, so my answer would be yes, there would.

They'd consent if we told them to consent. We could give them outstanding orders to obey all lawful orders issued by the UN. Are you under the assumption that they'd be corrupt with leadership? Also, I don't think America's status as a superpower means that we're immune from law, for the most part.

I also don't think that they would eliminate a world threat and allow another to rise.

I think that we will have to agree to disagree, this time. :)

Wyoming. Pop: 576,000. US Senators: 2
California. Pop: 38,000,000. US Senators: 2

Is that unfair? Should California seek to secede from the Union?

If they want to, they are free to try. But why would they want to?

In the House, which is supposed to represent the little people, California has 54 representatives, whereas Wyoming only has one.

The framers of the Constitution were wise in this area, too, it appears. :) .

The UN has revealed itself to be the lackey of the Western powers i.e. US, UK, France, Germany and that has cost the entire world. It was a good idea gone bad or perhaps an idea of Rockefeller's that played out the way he desired. It's better than nothing but it's recent culpability in Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc. show it to be a toady organization. I'm not thinking that N. Korea will give the UN anything except disconnected hemmhroids.

I choice "other." - Participating countries need to provide more support for UN efforts for it to be more effective.

What bliterhing idiot voted "UN is fine and serving its purpose well".

They should be banned from any politically relevant discussion.

The UN is crap. It's the equivalent of a kangaroo court. Nobody's afraid of it, nobody respects it.

Period.
And your childish diatribe has no business in any forum.
Its all opinion....
The UN can be improved, some members here have some good solutions...
Maybe , and this is the second attempt, the world is not civilized or developed enough to accept an organization of this type...

Wow, thanks earthworm. I haven't heard any good "I'm rubber and you're glue" vomit since grade school. Congratulations on breaking the streak.

Muster up a few more IQ points, and hop back in for a second effort.
