This is a hypothetical exercise.

If you do not partake, assume you do.

If possession and/or use of marijuana carried the death penalty, would you continue to partake?

Yes?
No?

My answer is that I would not chance it. So, no.

There's some country, I think it is Indonesia?, where they execute you for possessing the tiniest amount of any drug... and still they have druggies and drug dealers.

Addicted is addicted, and there's too much money in dealing it.

I don't partake now, but I certainly wouldn't if it were punishable by death.

For what it's worth, I definitely don't think it should be punishable by death. As for whether it should be legal, I am on the fence and would not vote one way or the other. I see plusses and minuses both ways.

Mj addictive? I thought one of the reasons they cite to legalize it, is that it isn't addictive?

Regardless, I am amazed that you would put your life in jeopardy over MJ.

What is with these marijuana threads? Why is everyone obsessing over it out of the blue?

I have no idea as to what you speak.
This is just a question that was recently in my thoughts so I thought I would ask.
So how about answering the question?

No - in the last few week across the net the interest and posting of marijuana related questions, debates and articles has skyrocketed . . . and I wouldn't smoke it regardless - I don't like to alter my awareness and sense of self. It only causes problems.

So maybe I have unwittingly been influenced.
That is how it works sometimes.

So how about making your answer in the poll?

I'll ponder. . . I usually don't poll.

In fact - I don't think I've polled in years.

But I'll make an exception for you.

No, wouldn't take the risk. No loss to me, I've never smoked it. Now if they outlawed pizza...

Cool!

though i consume the drug less than once every two years, i would be likely to leave any country stupid enough to kill pot users.

hypothetically if I smoked pot I would not chance it considering the punishment.

That's Malaysia. Here is a (fictional) film about it.

Amazon.com: Return to Paradise: Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, Joaquin Phoenix, David Conrad, Vera Farmiga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Nick Sandow, Joseph Ruben, Alain Bernheim, Steve Golin, Wesley Strick, Bruce Robinson: Movies & TV

Oh, I wouldn't... I haven't touched the stuff in decades.

But I think some people would.

MJ isn't physically addictive TMK, but anything can be psychologically addictive.

I smoke tobacco products... mostly cigars. Have been since I was 13. It's probably going to kill me some day, if something else doesn't kill me first. Yet I keep doing it.

I'm not normally an idiot.... ... but I am addicted to the habit of smoking, even though I know it is life-threatening.

So I'm extrapolating to what other people might do if MJ were a capital offense.

Non-responsive.

So, nobody get mad at me. I just saw a chance to pose a hypothetical question in line with the OP.

Suppose they made guns illegal - death penalty for possessing one (or maybe just 30 years in prison). Would you gun owners still keep one?

(Before you go into the usual rant about guns - I don't own one and I don't mind if you do. OK?)

Curiosity etc.....

I'd keep mine, because I wouldn't be hiding it, I'd be using it. Quite a lot I bet... and I am pretty sure I'd have lots of company.

I happen to very much respect you so please know that I'm not being snide but really? You would make them pry it from your cold dead hands? You vs. the police?

Did you know that's what the gunfight at the OK Corral was about? Disarmament?

Again, I remind all that this is a philosophical conversation.

I firmly believe such an act would trigger armed revolt, yes... and yes, I'd probably be one of the proverbial Revolting Peasants, yes.

A government that goes that far is a government that is out of control and isn't going to stop at trampling just ONE right into the mud.

There's a line in the sand there, and I'm just making sure it is clearly marked. I'm ready to fight for my rights, yes... is that so bizarre? That's how our country was founded, you know.

The "Shot Heard Round the World" started with Brit troops coming to disarm the Colonial militia armory.

Hijack!

Start your own poll.

And while you are at it, actually answer the poll question.

I did not say you were bizarre. I was hoping to hear what the philosophies were. Do you realize how many rights we have been deprived of over the years? Imagine those first IRS agent in 1913. Imagine coke-less Coca-Cola. Imagine the drug war (as per te OP). Imagine Obamacare. Imagine The Patriot Act. Government is on a slow but steady path to control everyone and everything. Partly from greed. Partly from the masses of population.

I don't think that the scenario is very likely. I don't think Obama will "take away your guns". But if and when this does happen (just as it is in many other countries) - will you be willing to die for that particular right? Apparently yes in your case but I'll be interested to see a few other responses.

Never said I liked any of those either... and it wouldn't take gun confiscation, Pelosi's AWB might be enough to be the trigger.

yeah, its bad enough as it is... but when they come to disarm the citizenry, its because things are about to get a lot WORSE and they don't want you to be able to fight back.

You are right and I apologize.

No, I probably would not smoke pot under the described circumstances.

Nooooooo! :)
Not thread participation.
The actual poll question. The yes or no portion.

Btw, if you start it, they will come.
And I will answer your poll question.
