l would like to have children having artistic talents..

No, it's not at all. A cowboy is a ranch or farm-hand, not a guitar-picker in an old pickup truck.
He builds and repairs fences, feeds cows and horses, breaks horses, and is the general caretaker of an agricultural operation.

And don't forget buying and selling at auction, dosing meds, and delivering foals and calves. Or cowgirls.

One of my girlfriends (Ph.D. in Gothic Lit., which I mention since some folks posting here stereotype "cowfolk," LOL) delivered a calf just a week ago when mama died giving birth. Not the first time she's done this either. Oh, and she cleans up right nice in pearls, pumps, and twinsets. ;)

This is serious guys and please answer the poll

You didn't define "Cowboy."
A friend of mine that recently passed away was a real cowboy. He went to Montana and worked as a cowboy. He left with his horse and pack on Sunday evenings or Monday mornings and followed the range fence, repairing as he went along, steering strays, curing problems. Unrolled the pack and camped every night cooking dead cow all the time. Maybe a few potatoes, etc. It took six days to go all the way around the ranch and he was back for Saturday action, whatever that might be. He was a really good friend and fellow dirt track racer, as well, and confided to me that the cowboy job was the absolute best job of his entire life. He didn't play the guitar too well.

while lacking any type of narrative, sweet grass is a really beautiful look at the lifestyle of modern 'cowboys"

Well, that doesn't sound badass at all.

It isn't a badass- that's the point. Cowboying is an honest-to-god hard job. I've known several "real" cowboys in my life. They are among my favorite people I've had the pleasure of knowing. They don't really tend to live a long life, because that life is hard.

I'm surprised there's anyone left in the modern era that still refers to themselves as "cowboys".

Well, what can I say? It's what they are. They ride, they rope, they herd, they are caretakers of livestock and the land, they fix, and they build. The common image of a cowboy is what you see in a western music bar, wearing starched button-down shirts, creased Wrangler jeans, cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat, gliding their woman around on the dance floor, doing the Two-Step. They are fine to look at, and carry a personna of style and strength, but that is only the general public's idea of a cowboy. Most actual cowboys wouldn't be caught dead in a C&W bar, because they would be embarrassed at all the whorish behavior they would see.

A lot of those guys probably don't even own any cows! ;)

Yes, there's a difference between a "rhinestone cowboy" and a real one. Nothing finer than those Stranglers and starched shirts with pearl snaps, though. I say check out the boots. You can see who dresses to dance and who wears 'em to work. ;)

If that's the kind of life they want, then I wouldn't stand in their way. Rather hard, physically demanding work, but honest. So, yeah, let 'em grow up to be cowboys!

They had a shot once, btw. Their grandparents got 'em a pony for Christmas when they were real little. :)

Or a horse for that matter. :)

No doubt about it. Sadly, cowboying is almost a lost art, and most of the people who think of themselves as such are city people who dress the part. It's pretty much a phenomenon that is the modern product of what is now called country and western music, which, btw, is vastly different from what it used to be. In this area, there are still a fair number of cowboys who walk the walk, because I live in an area which is pretty densely populated by cutting horse people and cow ranchers.

modern country is horrible. It's like they took everything bad about hair metal and then added some fiddling

I agree completely. Imo, the last of what really sounds like C&W was stuff along the lines of Clint Black and similar artists of that generation.

Don't go insulting fiddling. Though I just hate country in general, it's just horrible in every way like rap music or dubstep. I would also never let my son be a cowboy if I had one, I want my children to be successful in life.

Success is much more than just a paycheck. The people who live a cowboy lifestyle love that life. They are successful, just not wealthy, and certainly don't earn the respect of very many people, but as I said, success isn't based on how much you make. It's based on whether or not you enjoy what you do, and are satisfied with life as it is.

You wouldn't let your boy be a cowboy? That kind of attitude might just guarantee that this is all the kid ever wanted to be. ;)

Agreed. If you're working and living an honorable life and your children respect you, you're a success in life.

I'd prefer them to be a fiddler.

Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Johnny Horton they were the greats. honestly lately Texas country has become the way to go. Kevin Fowler and Kory Morrow, Adam Carroll they're pretty good, definitely different than the old timers.
