No doubt about it. Sadly, cowboying is almost a lost art, and most of the people who think of themselves as such are city people who dress the part. It's pretty much a phenomenon that is the modern product of what is now called country and western music, which, btw, is vastly different from what it used to be. In this area, there are still a fair number of cowboys who walk the walk, because I live in an area which is pretty densely populated by cutting horse people and cow ranchers.

modern country is horrible. It's like they took everything bad about hair metal and then added some fiddling

I agree completely. Imo, the last of what really sounds like C&W was stuff along the lines of Clint Black and similar artists of that generation.

Don't go insulting fiddling. Though I just hate country in general, it's just horrible in every way like rap music or dubstep. I would also never let my son be a cowboy if I had one, I want my children to be successful in life.

Success is much more than just a paycheck. The people who live a cowboy lifestyle love that life. They are successful, just not wealthy, and certainly don't earn the respect of very many people, but as I said, success isn't based on how much you make. It's based on whether or not you enjoy what you do, and are satisfied with life as it is.

You wouldn't let your boy be a cowboy? That kind of attitude might just guarantee that this is all the kid ever wanted to be.

Agreed. If you're working and living an honorable life and your children respect you, you're a success in life.

I'd prefer them to be a fiddler.

Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Johnny Horton they were the greats. honestly lately Texas country has become the way to go. Kevin Fowler and Kory Morrow, Adam Carroll they're pretty good, definitely different than the old timers.
