I'd prefer it wasn't, really... BUT...

It's hard for the government NOT to be involved to some degree, when we're talking about marriage as a joining of assets and fiscal responsibilities, and the issues of children and what happens to them in a divorce.

This could probably be sidestepped to a large degree by a pre-marital CONTRACT between two individuals, detailing what assets and fiscal responsibilities they share and so on, and detailing what will be done with properties and children and etc in a divorce... but getting gov entirely out of marriage probably isn't going to be feasible, since somebody will always want to lawyer their way out of their committments.

There really is no reason for government to be involved in marriage.

Children can be handled elsewhere.
Assets don't need to be shared
fiscal responsibilities can be handled by people

Done. I hate man made created disasters. Just bothersome illogical nonsense.

oops, made two entries, still trying to figure out the system. My bad... Please direct further comments to the new thread.

Because it has significant legal impact in terms of taxes and inheritances, the USG has been involved. Mariage defines a lot of other economic and medical issues as well. Marriage itself is performed at the State level but from the era when States would not honor marriages performed in other States, mainly over the topic of inter-racial marriage, the Federal government has a lot to do with it in those respects as well.

Now, the good news is that you can live and love whomever you want in any State. But, we encourage marriage as a society for the benefit of the partners and any offspring they may have.

So, I'm comfortable with the system that has been established. I don't see any plausible way to completely de;et the government in this matter.
