So really, it has nothing to do with "earning the privilege" but who can exert the most force.

True Power emanates from the end of a weapon and always has. That's just a fact of life.

    NO
    Its the people unified.
The non violent movements here (Martin L King) and Gandhi in India counter this...also, I believe in the downfall of Communism.

I see that nearly 90% of the people here favor the end to the harassment of Cuba, yet our Congress sits and does nothing..

Yes, because Castro's regime will soon be dead and with the travel ban and trade embargo lifted, Communism will soon die with him_

So if I show enough "power" I will be granted the "privilege" of freedom?

Re: Should the United States end it's trade embargo and travel ban with Cuba?

Cuba is at a crossroads. The Cold War is over, Fidel is out of power, and his brother is making some reforms. This change needs to be encouraged, not burdened with a useless embargo. In fact, the embargo has been worse than useless. In closing off the Cuban economy, Havana has been able to portray the US as a villain intent on destroying Cuba. Without the travel and trade restrictions, this boogeyman begins to look a lot less credible. The US and Cuba have a lot of potential ties and possible gains from trade. Cuba could provide a great deal of sugar and other crops. Trade and closer ties to Cuba could also help America nudge Cuba toward greater reform and liberalization. There is simply no good reason to block trade and travel with Cuba.

Even if one believes that Castro and the Communists are evil, they should still oppose the restrictions. Closing off regimes to the outside world does not encourage liberalization. It encourages inward-looking policies and greater inertia. I hate Castro and Communism, but fueling petty hatred, which is all the embargo manages to accomplish for us, is not an effective foreign policy strategy. The best strategy for encouraging change in Cuba is to foster closer ties, and raise the standard of living with trade. Once Cubans are no longer living in poverty or told to fear the "Colossus to the North" they will start to ask more questions of and demand more reform from their government.

So when the revolution inevitably gets crushed, because not enough people want to go back to the 17th century for you to put together a respectable rebellion, what do you do?
