As far as I can tell, they only celebrate it in Washington. The rest of the country doesnt care. One day Id like these celebrities to lead by example and just get to work. This smacks of royalty.

Well, how about former president's funerals? There is money involved there with additonal police support and staff to organize and run it. GH Bush and Carter are in the batter's box so to speak. Should they just put an obit in the paper and call it a day?

I really don't know myself. As someone else here noted there are vendor's whose income counts on these events.

You can go on and on with these questions. How about the winning World Series Team , should a city have to pay for their parade?

The bottom line is that the money is being spent in the USA and that is nice for a change.

Funerals are a personal thing. So yes, Im not in favor of special treatment. I dont like the royalty that being President or any politican has become. They are no different than us other than the power we give them. Sports winner? Thats up to the city. I wouldnt support it in my city. Sports is a business, and they can pay for things themselves.

    Three points...

    1. I didn't say she was/is. I just said she is acting like an old person who is fighting the idea.
    2. "Old" is subjective. You'll have to specify what you consider old to be.
    3. Evidence (her actions/'do) suggests she thinks or fears she is (see #1).

There are some things that I believe the office of President is entitled to... and, yes, I used the word "entitled"... just because they're President.

    • Secret Service protection. Including after office.
    • State funerals.
    • Inaugurations (first time, iffy about 2nd terms)
    • Essentially free travel while in office.*

    Stuff like that.

*- I don't mind his recent vacation in Hawaii, but I most certainly do mind that he went twice. Spare me the 'fiscal cliff' crap. Anybody could have seen that coming down to the last minute, and he should have juggled his schedule accordingly and made a single trip. It's not like he had "use it or lose it" vacation time to burn through.

You don't care and think it smacks of royalty, but you can't really say you speak for the rest of the country. Inauguration ceremonies and balls have been held since President Washington's first.

That's funny. It was a democratic proposal, and yet you see it as monarchical. This was one of the unique moments in the country's running where the President of the United States himself would discuss his ideas to the people, where it would run in the newspapers thereafter. Andrew Jackson, a man who wanted to further establish democratic values in the United States, did so by opening up the inauguration to the general public at the White House (I might add, tolerating the drunkenness of the crowd in the night to come).

Next thing you know, the State of the Union Address will be seen as Authoritarian, rather than the House of Representatives keeping him in balance.

I'm sure that's in the offing. He lives for that too, you know, lording over both chambers.

Fisher TV would show a rerun of The Big Bang Theory instead of the state of the union. That show gets crazy ratings even for its syndicated reruns.
