Do you think the United States is approaching an upcoming Civil War? Or maybe we will just become more and more divided?

The last election saw an almost 50/50 popular vote. Plus the debates over Healthcare, Gun Control, Etc.

Is there any evidence you are more divided?

A month ago I would have said no.

Today, I'm honestly a little worried.

No, not even close.

Well I researched it and it doesn't seem to show a recent pattern of a narrowing popular vote.

I'm pretty sure you guys have had always had contentious policy debates.

I'm an outsider looking in I guess, but political discourse doesn't seem to be any more antagonistic than it was 10 years ago.

There is a small minority of self-righteous fanatics who believe that in a given circumstance, a very large minority will start a conflict. I don't think that either those circumstances will be met, nor will people start any sort of organized movement against the US government.

What will happen, if anything, is we're going to see individual sociopaths shoot police officers because they believe they are going to take their guns away. It's going to be sporadic, won't do a whole lot, except kill innocent people, and, hopefully, galvanize the gun owner community to deal with their radical elements.

A few loud people have been claiming civil war is coming my whole life. It's a stupid idea that won't happen.

Nope. The only people who I've heard seriously hypothesize civil war are those who, in their difficultly accepting that Obama won re-election and frustration with his approach to the 2nd amendment, have abandoned the political process solidified by the Constitution they apparently hold dear, think they need to kill people to get their way. In other words, adults with guns are throwing temper tantrums.

No not really. There would be massive protesting first which we aren't seeing.

Nah.Most of those yapping civil war up never shot anything other than a target.

I agree with that although I think some politicians might be a target as well (hopefully, Feinstein has good security).

And, for what it's worth, I wouldn't be surprised if one or more posters on DP were the perpetrators as several posters either advocated or supported potential violence against the police and politicians.

There are a lot of things piling up, the economy and the debt being two big ones that could knock us into anarchy.

The recent NK act of putting a satellite in orbit means they could potentially set off a nuke over North America and knock out the power grid with an EMP, which would be chaos.

On top of that, I thought Obama's second term would be more of the same, and I didn't believe those who said that in his second term he would go extreme and push crazy crap on the country... but with this talk of him creating new gun control by fiat, by Executive Order, I'm starting to worry what else may be coming down the pike.

There are people who are, right now, watching to see what happens in this latest gun control thing, who are no-fooling-dead-serious prepared to go to war if it goes too far. I'm not talking about ignorant rednecks and loud-mouth fools, I'm talking about deadly dangerous ex-military types.

I sincerely hope it doesn't come to that.

my guess is no.

what i know for certain is that i won't be participating. i love my state, but if it were to participate due to this current status quo of hyperpartisan nonsense, i would leave.

the only way i would pull a weapon on someone is if they were hurting my pets, family, or some little kid. i'd also shoot at someone who was trying to kill me. i would not shoot at someone because i was upset about a ****ing election when there's another election coming up in four years.

grow up, America.

This is exactly how I feel. I'm a liberal so for 8 years, I was dealing with a President who I thought was seriously hurting the country and who I wanted out of office, but I didn't threaten a damn war. I voted.

The proper way to handle a political situation that you don't like is to find a way to get your guy to win - not to kill the people you disagree with.

I care about my country, but there are things that are more important than it - people and ideals that are more important. I won't be fighting in a civil war because some people can't get their **** together.

All rather unlikely IMO, and anyone who is crazy enough to try and go to war with the government over gun control would not last long, nor have enough numbers, nor support. People's lives will continue, you will still be able to go to the store and buy food, and things would still be normal, so no widespread support would manifest.

There is a fundamental disagreement in this country and the Obama administration has crystalized it.

When the majority figures out that it can vote the wealth away from the wealthy, the wealthy will be no more and we become a banana republic.

Don't worry about the wealthy, they will be just fine living in Canada and Mexico.

In two generations, the world will wonder how the USA was ever the preeminent power in the world. Oh, well, we had a good run.

Unlikely. We had an opportunity 150 years ago to settle this question once and for all. Unfortunately, after the North won the war they lost the peace and we are back to being a nation composed of some people who really don't want a central government and who would love to be able to do whatever the hell they want. The worship of the Gun and the fear and paranoia these people have over 'the gummint' coming to get them (we call them the black helicopter crowd) will always cause us problems but another civil war is unlikely.

The post directly above mine is a great example. Obama is their worst fear, primarily because he's black.

You'd have a perfect citizen of pre-nazi Germany.

You're a racist.

sorry to burst your bubble but that is called the democratic and legislative process.

No. We are no where near a civil war or a second american revolution. No where near any of that. To say otherwise is literally insanity.

You are so wrong about people not lasting long against the goverment. Iraq and Afghanistan proved that it can be done. Heres the difference, the people that would go up against the government have a lot more know how, an its in our backyard and the people who are in government now would be DIRECTLY targeted. Its one thing to fight a war overseas, its another to fight in and around your homes with your families at stake and targeted. That goes for both sides. Those kind of wars get into the kind of ugly you dont want to know about. One of the first things to go is normalcy. In order for the government to find those people they would have to take away civil liberty. You would not be able to come and go as you please and a whole other lot of bad things. I would not wish it on just anybody.

1. There are plenty of wealthy liberals who voted for Obama, so no.

2. If the rest of the 'wealthy' move away, then there are plenty of people in the US whose potential is being stifled by the insular, nepotistic environment that many of the current wealthy members of society use to keep success limited to certain groups of people. Those people will more than willing to take their place when they 'go away'.

3. LOL at you thinking Canada and Mexico, especially Canada, would be a better place for people who disagree with Obama. LOL

4. Hyperbole doesn't suit you.
