I'm always going to be leery of anti bank stances.
Some people (no not you or anyone else here) use that as a thinly veiled guise for antisemitism.
Wow! I haven't heard that one before! In hindsight I can see the historical connection, though.

I hear it a lot out of Muslims. If you talk to them a bit about things and world affairs, they eventually get around to blaming banks and the rich and then it becomes a Bad Jews thing.

Some big banks are pretty decent.
I have my mortgage with US Bank, they don't charge prepayment penalties.

As always with any bank, ymmv.

Pre payment penalties are bs...

By their very nature I think bankers are in a group that contains prostitutes, lawyers, and other highly selfish and money-grubbing people.

Every once in a while, Wake, you say something that is highly astute.

I agree, that's why you should always ask before closing on a loan.

Theres another conundrum she didnt get the loan from Bank of America, BOA was the 4th bank to hold her mortgage, it was sold that many times in 13 yrs.

I went with a small local bank, they immediately sold it to US bank.
So far, so good.

She should inspect her original loan docs, to see if there is a prepayment penalty.
If not, BOA can't charge it, if I remember right.

I asked her..and of course she is having problems finding it...but the small print harry it would be buried in 3 huge pages of legal mumbo jumbo...
For all my general all the time transactions I have a credit union...for checking...visa etc...
I also have USAA military banking and insurance etc...I have a very very low interest rate master card with them...

One of the most important things I learned from my father was, "Never sign anything without reading and understanding it." When I went in to finalize my first home loan I thought the lady was going to have an anxiety attack! It took me a half-hour to read all that junk. She was wringing her hands after five minutes. ;)

It is probably their fee to prepare and record the certificate of satisfaction at the courthouse showing that the loan has been paid in full.

I guess you havent seen the 6 page legal disclaimers of late...most people if they could read it...couldnt understand it and that is the purpose

Banks are going to be bailed out, either way.
The federal reserve is the lender of last resort.

On the plus side, most of those guys paid the money back, with interest.

Did you read the Rolling Stone article in the OP, Harry? You'll see that you are not quite correct. Interesting, eye-opening stuff, to say the least.

You'll do just fine Harry. Matt Tabbi is an excellent journalist.

Well, the problem I have with articles like this, is the same problem I had in school.
To summarize, get to the point already.

Give me figures, the information.
I don't need a long drawn out story to get the gist.

Well that's fine if that is they way you are. Unfortunate, though, as you are selling yourself short.

I disagree, I read it through.
It's too wordy for my tastes.

What it amounts to is, the government lied, the banks lied and the party keeps going.
Goes back to the ole libertarian argument of, don't pick favorites, let them die if they have to.

I may be wrong, but banks don't get that way, all on their own.
They walked it all the way up, hand in hand with the government.

Actually, I got a copy and read it first, then spent $20 for a lawyer to answers a few questions I had about it. Sadly, the one I had to sign was a little different than the one I studied - so it took me 30+ min to read and compare.

You think thats necessary or the right thing for banks to put you through....plus you paid part of the fee upfront paying a lawyer and I dont know where you live but around here talking to a lawyer on the phone cost more than that..

That was one of the biggest reasons for initiating this poll. It does show some criminal wrongdoing and its' facilitators. Looks like the facilitators all got lpromotions or made "clean" getaways, unless, we the people find a way to prosecute.

It's not only the big banks. I belong to a local NJ bank. They now charge me if I do not use their ATM and recently I stopped payment on a check and they charged my account by 30.00. This is outrageous!! Wish I could keep my money in my mattress!! I hate banks!!
