because unemployment is insurance that you pay into.

if your house burns down, should you be forced to do clerical work for Allstate in exchange?

Unemployment is designed to go for 26 weeks , no more. What we are doing now is borrowing money to cover it which is wrong. Your comparison is asinine

while i'm not for making unemployment last indefinitely, it is still insurance that we pay for in advance. we're better off if people have some time to find a new job in their field.

So I guess you don't understand the difference insurance and investment. If I pay car insurance for 6 months and get hit, I don't get just what I paid in, I get what the policy provides.

I'd be all for having welfare folks go to school, light work or some such but the funding for such programs is never approved. It costs quite a bit to train folks to do whatever job paying a semi-decent wage, plus getting the street cleaners to and from where ever they are to work would most likely overwhelm what few resources are available. I know in small town rural Oklahoma most city work is done by work release inmates. In a road crew of 6 there maybe one city employee, the rest are inmates.

If you have been off more than 6 months you aren't looking that hard to begin with

Yeah but how many years of unemployment until we can just put their ass on welfare and be done with it?

i don't disagree. at some point, it is no longer unemployment insurance. however, it really depends on the job market. when i was unemployed, it wasn't happening in 26 weeks. i'm not sure how it is now.

i don't think that they should keep extending it, though. it's artificial; kind of like extending the payroll tax holiday forever.
