Does the media show bias against black people?

Does the media show bias against black people?

Don't take me the wrong way: I don't think very many people consciously have such thoughts. But there are demonstrable implicit biases that remain. This is one of those implicit or subconscious biases.

Fair enough, thanks for the clarification.

That is certainly not my thoughts. If they are yours, seems to me you are the racist one.

No, I think they are typical of people who see the show, though they may not apply to all individuals. I'm talking mainly about implicit bias, rather than overt or conscious racism.

What evidence do you have that it is typical of most people? As I said, seems to me you are showing your own prejudice.

If anything, I'd say the media is biased in the favor of black people. Nowadays, if you see some loving family on a commercial, it's a black family. Apparently they bitched long enough about how the media is white-centric, so now they have to remake the Cosbys in order to appease consumers.

In the USA show Psych, guess which one is the bumbling guy - the white guy or the black guy?

In any commercial with a white man and a black man, it's the white guy saying something stupid while the black guy sounds like the voice of reason.

Yeah, biased against blacks. Sure...

If anything, we see negative portrayal of middle-aged white men, who are regularly portrayed as stupid and weak.

The media mocks or negatively stereotypes almost everyone at some time or other. Whether they show bias against blacks overall or not, I couldn't really say.

The media and news have a huge bias/stereotypical portrayal of the African american community. The news also likes tho show crimes against black people much more than white people, thats been a proven fact.

Pick up any copy of "The Klansman."

If you want a more mainstream example, most episodes of "Cops" or "The first 48" present black people doing bad things--things not typical of all black people.

I never really noticed a racial bias on cops. In fact, thinking back, they seemed to do a pretty good job showing the diverse racial background of criminals due to the roving nature of the show

Whenever I've watched it, most of the suspects or perpetrators are African American. Now, in the sense that the people filmed behaved as the film depicts, there is no bias. But the upshot is nevertheless that people seem to get the idea that African Americans behave that way, or tend to behave that way.

See, for instance:

The second directly addresses "Cops."

do you have a link to the full paper?

Those shows were not meant to show what was typical of most black people, just that one person on the show.

It is sad you think all black perople represent every other black person.

When was the last time you saw a music video with no black back up dancers?

The media is full of s***, but I doubt they have bias against any minorities.

I've seen just as many white people on Cops as black people being arrested. In addition, how is that a bad interpretation? Did they not commit the crime they are being arrested for? We had Cops near the town I live in a while back. I know a couple of guys on the force there. The people at Cops don't intentionally cut the tape they take to show bias. They simply put the most interesting and severe crimes on TV. If those crimes are portrayed by black people, so be it.

By media I don't just mean the news. I mean the entertainment media as well such as television and movies and even commercials. Do we still see negative portrayals of black people?
Pretty white girl goes missing in the Bahamas and its news, black girls goes missing not even a peep.A bunch of white people are killed in a mass shooting and its news for weeks, A bunch of black people are killed in a mass shooting and not even a peep or its just dismissed as a drive by or gang related.

I think the media does show bias against black people. One glaring example is the issue of showing ID to vote. They media presumption is that white people are the only ones who have enough brains to get an ID.

But then my black friends think affirmative action hurt blacks far more than it ever helped because they are not ever credited with getting ahead on their own. It is a presumption that they can't.

How many black teens have gone missing in Aruba?

And to what do you refer regarding the 'mass shooting.' I don't think anyone is going to get all hot and bothered over gang wars.

Someone voted "Yes". I'd love to see an example.

Crime drama TV series are a prime example. In real life both the victims and perps of crime over-represent blacks, in TV that is exactly the opposite. This intentional distortion of reality does two things, 1) it reduces the use of black actors/actresses and 2) it allows the impression that blacks do not suffer from crime at anywhere near the rates that they actually do. Some may assert that the opposite is true, that it is done to protect "the image" of blacks as violent perps of crime, but ignoring reality is physically harming the black crime victims much more than it is protecting them from getting their feelings hurt.

You would be very, very wrong. Ask those that dare not let their children play outside, or walk to the corner store for an ice cream treat. Those that may avoid "the hood" do so, those that have no choice must suffer beyond what most can even imagine. The press not giving this situation due coverage, are intentionally keeping it going in the name of "compassion" for not tarnishing the image of minorities, as perps, that they wish to portray. It is not true that most minorities are criminals, but it is true that they are disproportionally the victims of crime; not reporting that aspect of reality keeps that so, hurting the majority of them. About the only time you see minority crime victims reported nationally is when the perp is white, then it is pretended to be "typical" and the result of racism. That was very much the point of the Zimmerman/Martin case getting so much publicity, while hundreds of Martins (minority young males) are killed daily for nothing more than visiting a convenience store or having nice shoes on.
