They may not be as concerned as the average citizen, but there is still some semblence of thought process going on, and most of us learn right from wrong, and that killing is wrong, in our formative years. The American public as a whole is concerned, and if we sentence and execute murderous criminals, consistently, the deterrent effect will have a lessening effect.

I do not support any gun control measures beyond what we already have, because it's not the guns that are causing the problem.

You are more accepting of violence than am I.

If the video games I have seen kids play have already been rated, than the rating system needs to be revised.

They exist as guidelines only. Everything released commercially is rated by the ESRB for games or by the Motion Picture Association of America for movies. These are used as guidelines only and that is how they should be.

Well that system is obviously not working. Time for a different system.

why?

the rating system only stops a kid of a certain age from personally buying it not their parents from buying it and giving it to them, besides this would do nothing in reality anyway

It's not that I am any more accepting that anyone else. It's that I don't support punishing the many innocent for the crimes of the few. Sorry, but you're not going to be successful at trying to put a guilt trip on me- I don't play that game.

Most violent video games are rated M for "mature" which is comparable to an R rating on a movie. In some states you must be 18 to purchase these games. Ultimately though if a parent doesn't want their child playing a more violent video game they, as parents, can remove the game from the home or not purchase it for their children in cases where minors cannot buy them.

Just because parents allow their kids to play games rated for mature, doesn't mean the ratings are wrong.
A lot of parents just don't give a crap.

What are your suggestions for reducing the needless slaughter of thousands of innocent people each year?

Crazy people are not concerned with sentencing or the death penalty. We need to fight this gun violence on many fronts, among them:

violence ratings on video games and movies just like they devised for sexual content;

That is already done, I believe.

Banning high capacity magazines and the guns that use them;

The guns that use them have no clue how many rounds the inserted magazine contains. That sounds like the AWB already tried that did nothing to stop/slow gun crime.

Requiring a waiting period for new gun purchases in all states, including at gun shows;

Waiting for what? FFL dealers already use NICS background checks and they are virtually instant, at most done in minutes.

Extending the background check to mental history;

What do you think that should include? If not certified as criminally insane, or mentally disabled then what would ever show up and where?

Those are the best proposals I've heard. What are other suggestions?

It would be very, very expensive but - how about enforcing the existing laws, as written, by actually trying those arrested on the real charges (instead of plea dealing). Impose the appropriate real sentences and that just might act as a deterrent or at least would help keep the criminal 3% out of circulation for much, much longer for each conviction.

Lately the media, especially the liberal media has been scapegoating video games as a possible factor in the Connecticut shooting. Do you believe that violence in video games and movies are an issue and they can cause things like the tragedy we have seen recently. If you do believe they are an issue what do you think should be done? I personally believe that video games/movies cannot cause violence and blaming them is just a stupid reaction to a horrible tragedy. Video games and movies should not be censored or have enforced ratings like minors can't buy M rated video games. Please explain your opinion.

If violent video games and movies where an issue then there would millions of mass shootings.So the answer to the poll question is no.

You are more accepting of violence than am I.

this makes no sense, just because you disagree on gun laws doesnt mean in anyway what so ever she is more accepting of violence than you

What are your suggestions for reducing the needless slaughter of thousands of innocent people each year?

The same things we've been doing.
Violent crime has been going down for decades.

Just stay the course, rather than concoct useless bans on video games, movies and guns.

Come up with better solutions then for reducing violence in this country.

So because nothing else is being proposed we must have better ratings for video games? That won't solve anything.

I'm not certain, Gosh, when we talk about kids growing up on violent video games. I think video games may in some way dehumanize violence and the consequences of violence.

This might be a possibility, for a child raised in a relative absence of any moral guidance... but then again there's a lot of kids like that, and 99.999% of them never go shoot random strangers.

Almost every young male who isn't homeless plays violent video games. There is an aggressive aspect to it to be sure, but for the vast majority this isn't a problem. And yes, someone who is mentally ill may react to these games differently, but the same can be said for Taxi Driver. The problem, once again, is the person's mental illness.

I propose media blackouts, those prevent media from glorifying killings not restricting video games.

Better parenting. And for your case, not blaming everything but responsible parties.

A system that prevents kids from being exposed to non-stop violence, whatever that takes.

So your going to have police bust into people's homes to check for 18+ content, even if you do how do you rove that a minor was playing it.

I used to be of the opinion that violent video games were to blame, but they are all over the world as well as really violent movies and other nations don't seem to have the problems we do. I do support ratings and don't think really young kids should play them, but beyond that...

Just an observation on my part though.
