Not a chance, the gap would have been even larger. The only republican that was in the primaries that could've beaten Obama was Herman Cain.

:lamo
Herman Cain would have lost even worse!!!

cant let any of the nuts of the party run for president and expect any type of fight

Palin
McCain
Bachmann

would have all lost in landslides

Yes, but he had good policies and was ahead of most others and in the running with the rest until the "affair accusations."

good policies?

like what his 9-9-9 he couldnt define he was clown shoes

Romney was clearly their least worst candidate by a country mile. If he couldn't pull it off, then the primary dropouts had less than no chance.

I don't believe the Right in general is clamoring for someone farther to the right. Every four years I am astounded by the effort they invest in "mobilizing the base"... the very same base that that dislikes the Democrats every bit as much as they like the Republicans. They are already mobilized. Politics stopped being about liking "your guy" in favor of disliking "the other guy" years and years and years ago. The fact that the Democrats got someone in 2008 that they genuinely liked made him pretty hard to stop, but enough people fell into the disappointed category in 2012 to nullify the previous advantage.

The Republicans need to start appealing to moderates if they want any hope of gaining seats anytime soon. And even though the word "moderate" can barely be applied, I think Ron Paul would have had a huge victory if he had the nomination.

I don't think Paul specifically would've had a huge victory. Its way too easy to come up with attack ads for him. But I agree, Republicans need to nominate more moderate candidates, at least on social issues.

Finally someone uses the proper colours. Out networks made fun of that fact with saying it looks like the Liberals have won a solid majority in the South and Mid West while the West Coast and the North are voting Conservative and there seems to be some NDP sates scattered about because the swing states were orange on the map they were using.

We used to use the proper colors here. I have no idea who decided to flip them, but it was when I wasn't looking.

I wish they'd switch back. The red Republican/blue Democratic maps are always so ugly.

Which is why liberals hated him so much.

I don't think liberals hated him. I think they were amused by him. I'm not a liberal, though I am an anti-conservative, and I found him incredibly entertaining, though not to his benefit.

I might be a new comer to Republican politics, but his approach just sounded asinine. I know Independents yammer on about the "turd" politicians that are our leaders, but I couldn't in a million years consider them able to pull the trigger on such a political outsider, whereas a certain segment of Republican voters wouldn't hesitate for a moment in order to vote for Cain. It's just a travesty.

Most "independents" who rage against 'Establishment politicians' in such a way are Tea Partiers who dislike associating with the Republican Party. This might sound counterintuitive, but the polling in the last election bore it out: the reason Romney was racking up such massive margins among "independents" was because they were Republicans in all but name.

To an actual independent - I voted for Gary Johnson in this last election, and wrote a name in the one before it - there was nothing remotely appealing about Herman Cain as a real, living, breathing candidate. His rhetoric was boilerplate and hyperpartisan; the only thing remotely endearing was just how damn cute it all was, citing the Pokemon theme in his exit speech and all.

The fact that a segment of the Republican base took him at all seriously as a legitimate contender speaks very poorly of the state of the modern Republican Party. And I suspect there was a base motive at work - the desire for political (and especially racial) cover, to be able to say "see? we're not the bigoted ones here". It didn't work because Cain didn't win the nomination, but you saw some of this in Allen West's defeat, along with constant reminders about how Democrats were really the Party of slavery, once-upon-a-time-ago.

EDIT: Had Cain won the nomination, or Bachmann or Perry or Santorum or anyone but Romney or Huntsman, it wouldn't have been very difficult for me or most other legitimate independents to pull the lever for Obama.

My actual answer is just a "No."

The only truly viable candidates, imho, were Gingrich and Paul,

both of whom could have actually effected the changes that would have "saved" America,

with their intimate knowledge of all of the inner workings of our gov,
as well as their scholarship concerning our Constitution.

One got labeled an alzeheimer'ed out weird-o;
the other, ...

He was "good enough" to be third in line for the presidency,

but we'd rather have Boozy-Biden, the exemplar of ...
alchieness, with no redeeming stoneredness.

ummm...

What was the question, again?

Romney was suspect from day one.

RomneyCare in Mass sound like a good leg to stand on in the Universal Health Care arena?

His knack of being for, against AND undecided on pretty much ANY given issue
lent him the opportunity to appear as though he were still mulling it all over, whatever "it" was,
and would follow the will of the peeps.

He actually said that THAT was how RomneyCare came to be ~
the peeps WANTED it, so he did his best to give them something viable.

My own personal feelings about the man have to do with his credibility, and credulity,
concerning a religion which is nothing more than a cult,

but the GOP KNEW that that would be one of the stumbling blocks,

with Paul, Santorum AND Romney.

WTF do you think that these mormons have been presented to us for consideration?

And we're offered THREE to choose from ...

Gee. Is the USA sort of known for anything?
Perhaps being CHRISTIAN?
Maybe being based upon Christian principles?

WHO is the GOP's "base?"

Mid-America? The Bible belt?

Paul, with his rock solid belief in our founding principles,
as well as founding PAPERS, i.e. our constitution,

had to be discredited, imho.

His stance on gov ~
their reach,
their power,
their ability to oversee and control ~

made it ... oops. bathroom/toke break

ANY of the candidates.

Were ANY of them viable???

Or were they just propped up, there,
for all to throw rotten tomatoes at?

We got rooked,

big time.

Why is it that lunatic fringers are incapable of typing properly?

I think the far right wing is dying, and the tea party brought this death about even more quickly. Santorum would have lost even by even more. Romney was an attempt to swing a bit left. Fail.

Y'all seem to be in the same camp.

Me? I'm just a libertarian who's sick to death of the Republican Party and wish it would shuffle off this mortal coil posthaste. Alas, one can dream.

You making fun of my typing?

sort of ...

I was going to give you the GRAMMATICAL GOOMBAH,

but even as an editor, I can find no fault with your posts.

Alas.

Right, but you're not very smart, so it comes off more like you're simply rambling into the æther.

REPUGS are sick of the GOP!

This last fiasco,
of holding the carrot of true constitutionalism before our noses,

and then yanking it away,
leaving us with a mouth full of dust ...

tsk, tsk, tsk

I don't give a good Goddamn about your concept of "Constitutionalism"; I don't want nutjobs holding the reigns of power.
