As is would be easily expected, societies change over time. In America we no longer have slavery. We honor the heritage of the Native Americans. We pay taxes in more ways than we can count on our fingers; federal income, SS, inheritance, state income, state sales, capital gains, special taxes on alcohol and tobacco, etc. We have public state operated schools where Christianity is banned except under certain conditions and I could go on.

In reading up on the Founding Fathers I often ask myself which political party would they most likely join and why. What do you think?

As white slave owners and millionaires, they would go Republican all the way.

Look at how many amendments and changes to their convenient constitution we've had to make just to get part way to decency.

Closer to libertarian than anything else. Though after they saw how well we've kept the Republic, they may just stay an English colony.

Re: If the Founding Fathers were alive today, what party would most they be members o

I'd say Libertarian in most cases.

Re: If the Founding Fathers were alive today, what party would most they be members o

They'd disavow what the US has become and head for parts unknown.

Re: If the Founding Fathers were alive today, what party would most they be members o

None, really, as they're all pretty much aberrations.

That's more or less unimaginable.

None of them. I think they'd be organizing a tea-tossing into the Potomac.

None. The Founding Fathers were not in favor of "factions" (AKA political parties)

Re: If the Founding Fathers were alive today, what party would most they be members o

I think most of them would be freaked out by the slave president, or the devil box that produces images from hell.

Re: If the Founding Fathers were alive today, what party would most they be members o

I don't think the Founders were uniformed in their thinking and if they had to join one of the parties today I highly doubt they would all join the same one.

And yet they almost all ended up members of one.

The Federalists would lament the non-existence of their party and would also probably stand horrified at how far things have gone in the direction of federal power seizure from the states, and hopefully most of them would feel guilty, because they ought to.

The Democratic-Republicans would disassociate themselves entirely from what the monster their party has become, which should now properly be called the Socialist Party.

The LP represents the ideas of classical liberalism well, but paleoconservative Republicans also succeed in this regard.

They'd watch daytime TV and become stupid.

Since the Constitution is a liberal document, I say they would mostly be Democrats.

Dammit, Digsbe stole my answer. The founding fathers where not monolithic. You would get some democrats, some republicans. Probably not many libertarians since the founding fathers where quite brights and very practical.

Re: If the Founding Fathers were alive today, what party would most they be members o

Well they clearly wouldn't be Obama-approving democrats, thats for sure.

No. Wrong on both accounts. This would take a long lesson in history which would show how for most of history the democrats have been the pro-slavery anti rights people, including at the time after the war of independence and the civil war.

Anyway. My answer is unrelated to either. The founding fathers play no part in todays world. They cannot pick up the cup and bring things back to the normal, good state of affairs. Only the living can do that. Sadly, there are very few who are willing and many who are incapable and unwilling in governance. On both sides of the political american spectrum.

Re: If the Founding Fathers were alive today, what party would most they be members o

This depends on who we are talking about. Jefferson would probably be a libertarian. Adams maybe a moderate Dem. The issue of slaves would be irrelavant since we no longer have slavery. Those that held slaves and thought them as property would probably be Tea Party people.

I do not know the politics of many of the FF"s but again it would depend.

I can think of any number who would be Obama type democrats. Most notably probably would be Jefferson.

Re: If the Founding Fathers were alive today, what party would most they be members o

I think that they'd fit into multiple parties. For one, I could not see Jefferson being a Republican with the party the way it is. Honestly, I couldn't see any of the Founding Fathers being Republicans. I could easily see Hamilton being a Democrat; but other than that, I'm fairly certain that the Founding Fathers would either be Libretarian (was liberty not the reason that they started their own country?) or start their own party.

Thye Constitution was indeed a liberal document. It was very liberal at the time, actually. Those were the democrats of old. Since FDR, the Dems and Republicans flopped sides of view.

Re: If the Founding Fathers were alive today, what party would most they be members o

The opinions of the 'Founders' are, in my view, irrelevant. Not only were none of the men in that loosely-affiliated group capable of foreseeing the long-term history of the new nation they created, most of them weren't particularly attached to the principles they declared for at the outset. Only a few of them hold any value at all today - Jefferson and Paine and Franklin, mainly, as the most forward-looking of the lot.

I believe Washington had quite a bit of foresight as well. BUt I defintely agree on Jefferson and Paine.

Re: If the Founding Fathers were alive today, what party would most they be members o

They wouldn't be part of any party, they'd be disgusted with the entire political establishment we have right now.

Washington belonged to the Federalist clique, though not a Federalist himself. And the principles of the Federalists were, essentially, to mimic as closely as possible the then-successful mercantilist/feudalist model of government, which history of course buried under ash.
