Is it racist to ask for immigrants to speak English?

Does not follow. They still pay taxes and contribute. And a good number stay.

How many times do I have to say this? You don't know this information. Hence the term "undocumented."

Lol! Thing is, you don't know who is productive and who isn't when you have no qualifications and its just a free for all.

Do you think it matters? Like said, they get hired. If they were truly a burden, we'd have ended this problem decades ago. There's a reason we haven't.

Of course we have a good idea. They work for people. We know as much as we want to know.

Good Lord, you are so full of crap I can smell you from here. J/K . . . kinda.

If they're illegal they pay sales tax for their purchases, but they don't pay income tax. The only exception to that is if they steal someones identity in order to get a job as an employee officially listed on the company's books.

That's not always the case because sometimes they go by "employee identification numbers" instead of social security numbers. Nice little loophole there. Lol!

You do after they are gone, your new roof leaks and your shed falls down, but you've saved thousands on the work that was done. :)

I'm telling you, we've had this problem for as long as I can remember. We have the laws on the books to end it. No one wants to. They like using them to foster partisan bickering, but we allow them. I'm telling if we didn't get something out of it, it wouldn't happen.

Well, I'd be very interested in seeing a link to that.

Here is one link. It is ironic further that most of their illegal immigrants are Americans. I have heard on TV shows that southern Mexico has a huge problem with central american illegal immigrants who head for the US but never make it which feeds the push north by Mexicans.

We've had cases of them working for many a company, and one way of another, they managed to pay taxes. They get help I suspect with the identity issue.

Nobody wants to enforce the laws. Nobody wants to come down hard on these companies that like to hire illegals at slave wages. Everyone wants to pander to the next "wave" of immigrants.

Or work for small subcontractors that are not on any books at all.

Easy test. Do we still have illegals?

Yep. If you can bill labor at $20/hour and pay them $8/hour that helps make it OK.

Well, you can't expect someone who just got here to speak fluently. That's naive and unrealistic. Though they should put all effort to learning English over time, it's only fair. They should in no way expect us to speak their language, however.

It isn't racist, just silly if they're new around here. However, at some point something gotta give.

I live in South Florida and go to school in Miami, don't speak spanish but I can get the idea of what people say. Hasn't helped me in any serious way, but sure does come in handy at certain parties. I do wish I could speak it, learning's a bitch though.

Popular perception would disagree, but technically you're correct. There are many peoples of the same race that speak different languages.
Oh well then it's racist to force me to speak English, too, seeing as how I'm German (mostly).

Interesting link, and that is what happens when you have lax laws or a refusal to enforce the existing laws. I imagine that Mexico's illegal immigration problem isn't as big as ours.

Once on the travel channel some show gave the tip that all you need to do is try to speak the native language and all is forgiven. You can mess up completely but if people see that you're trying they won't hate on you for it.

That happens a lot of times in the construction and landscaping industries, both loaded with illegal immigrants.

Depends on the people. If it's here, yea, that works. But could go differently in some other country depending on who you encounter.

Excuse it anyway you want, but if we wanted it stopped, it would be.

There are many who want it stopped. It's those who are always afraid of offending who stand in the way of making any kind of meaningful progress.
