His presidency had some significant accomplishments--regardless if you agree with them or not--just like any other president in modern history. But they were significant achievements nonetheless.

  • Issued an executive order prohibiting federal funds for international family planning groups that provide abortions and contraceptive services.
  • Upheld the ban on abortions at military hospitals.
  • Reduced taxes on dividends and capital gains.
  • Made $33 million available for abstinence education programs in 2004.
  • Supports the Defense of Marriage Act - and a Constitutional amendment saying marriage is between one man and one woman.
  • Not once did Iraq ever attack America during his 8 years in office, due to his toppling of the Saddam regime.
  • Expanded the role of faith-based and community organizations in after-school programs.
  • Was the first president to get elected to have a DUI conviction, proving that anybody could be president, regardless of past misdeeds, and providing that you found Jesus.
  • Saved America from the "Clinton Recession" that was starting it's slow creep in the late 1990s, with tax cuts for the rich.
  • "Country-pop" genre of music made a triumphant resurgence during his presidency, moreso than at any time in modern American history.
  • Christian "megachurches" experienced a huge boom during his presidency that survives to this day (albeit with lesser influence), despite President Obama's stubborn "War on Religion."
  • Provided a "moral contrast" to the sexual sins of the Clinton White House.
  • Pushed through THREE raises for our military. Increased military pay by more than $1 billion a year.
  • Killed the old US/Soviet Union ABM Treaty that was preventing the U.S. from deploying our ABM defenses.

Surely you are being sarcastic with most of this?

Yes he should Just before they push him off :)

Yes then we could have Bush kissing it.

I've seen Mount Rushmore. It is certainly impressive.

Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln were certainly huge figures in our history. Teddy Roosevelt... well he was quite an interesting character but not of the same magnitude as the others.

Personally I am not sure it should ever have been built though. I felt about it much the same way I felt when I stood in the Lincoln Memorial in DC.... yes it is impressive, but I feel uncomfortable about portraying human beings, however important, as larger-than-life demigod-like figures. It smacks of idolatry to me.

I don't think W is of the same caliber as Washington, Jefferson or Lincoln. Now, Teddy.... well, I found the guy fascinating but he just isn't in the same league. You could compare W to Teddy and they wouldn't be that far apart in magnitude.

But no, I don't favor putting any more faces on Mt Rushmore.

If you did, Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt would all grow hands, and have the most epic face-palm in the history of face-palms.

Im with goshin...Im not in favor of changing it...we honor and degrade all presidents at will...lets leave a classic we all grew up with alone...and for gods sake we dont need another endless battle tearing the country apart that Obama deserves to be there more than Clinton or Bush or Reagan...it would turn into another never ending cluster****

I wish this poll was public so anybody that answers yes could quickly be added to my list of posters that are biased hacks and not to be taken seriously.
He was one of the worst presidents of my time

Each of the presidents on Mount Rushmore fundamentally transformed this country for the better in some way or another. Even giving George W. the benefit of the doubt on all points and looking at his presidency in the best light imaginable from every angle, I don't think that's something you can say about him.

FDR is the only other president I think would absolutely fit into that line-up. Truman, Eisenhower, and Wilson might also fit, but could also fairly be left out.

Ive voted yes because joke polls deserve joke answers...

So Bush can be added after FDR?

A better question might be: should Mount Rushmore be finished?

I'm agreeing with just about everyone else here, and I'll ask the same question... Are you joking? Seriously.

it's interesting to me that Mt. Rushmore will probably be one of the longest lasting American (or human) achievements. it could last tens of thousands of years whether humans do or not.

aliens visiting the ruins of earth will tour Mt. Rushmore, the pyramids, and will possibly be able to enjoy a Twinkie, assuming the brand continues.

;)

An even better question is should it be given back to the rightful owners the Sioux.

If you did, Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt would all grow hands, and have the most epic face-palm in the history of face-palms.

Roosevelt would have only face-palmed because he would have said, "Why didn't you invade Iran and Syria!"

Nah, now it belongs to everyone--it is a National Park.

there's also the bas relief of the confederate generals on the side of Stone Mountain GA near atlanta, as well as the Crazy Horse memorial, which when finished I believe will dwarf mount rushmore... also the jesus of rio de janerio, the sphinx...lots of stuff will be around in millenia, except for the buddhas of bamyan.

Bush might have done a lot of good things, but none of those warrant putting his face on a massive national monument.

I think it should have Barack Obama, Bill & Hillary Clinton and also Al Gore. All Democrats; all highly enlightened, and all possessing big enough egos to match the size of that mountain side.

I think all presidents should be put on Mount Rushmore.
