Now I know since I'm younger that this is an easier question for me but for older members of society would you be willing to end this ridiculous plan? I'm sorry it's a damn albatross around the neck of the economy, and the government has no bussiness in wealth redistribution; if I'm broke when i'm old then that's my fault not the next generations I mean shouldn't you have to atleast serve the government before you get entidlements, IE veteran benefits? (no ****ing with them.) I feel if one has sacrificed his blood for America then his treasure should never be spent by Americans (blood and treasure) BTW all of our treasure would be traded for one speck of American blood.
Yes, let's give it up, or make the SS payments continue for the next of kin.

Correction "surplus funds," either the government needs to quit overtaxing us or it should use that money to pay down the deficit I am in no way opposed to that.

Seniors count for a considerable amount of voters. I don't think that either party would want to loose favor with this population.

“it seems to me that the best way to deal with this is to say that everyone over 45 will continue to be eligable for SS benifits, but no one else will be. everyone will continue paying taxes into it until all those 45 year olds die. something to that effect at least. I'm not sure what the demographic projections say about how that would be funded.”

So your just screwed if your 44 eh?
So the 44 year old has to pay into something for what could be 30-40 years and they get nothing in return?

How about sending all the illegal aliens home…..who get benefits and who aren’t even citizens. They are the ones who are helping suck our country dry.

“Immediately end SS payments to anyone with a household income of over $100,000.”

I agree with ProudAmerican who said,
“I get so tired of the "the rich can easily afford it so make them pay more" argument.
Whether they can afford it or not is completely irrelevant.”

Punish the wealthy who have also paid into the system? I don’t think so.

And what happens to all those disabled people who are retarded or have physical problems who cant work?

    Dragonslayer said,
“Sadam had that country under control until Bush and the Oil Companies invaded. There were no terrorist from Iraq killing Americans until Bush invaded.’

Yea Sadam was filling up mass graves full of his own people………you call that control ??????????????????? FOR CRYING OUT LOUD HE WAS SHREDDING PEOPLE TO DEATH. Even his own son in laws he murdered.

This war saved a lot of Iraqi lives.

Hey turtledove……..great idea ya came up with
…”If you want the rich to keep paying more and more, they need to get more and more say in how the government is run. say another vote for every 1000 dollars in additional Federal income tax paid”

Iriemon said, “Disagree, how much they can afford it is completely relevant.”

Yea relevant to the moocher who really doesnt want to work and sits on his arse doing nothing and expecting everything. Blood suckers……..

Kandahar said, “Heh, are the old people going to overthrow the government by smacking senators with their walkers?”

Hey, I have a new appreciation for those who have walkers. Since my hip surgery 2 weeks ago……..I’ve had to use one, minus he tennis balls. I think it would work……as I have hit a few people already by mistake.

And as the boomers age they will have considerable more power.

Younger guys like TOT who argue against raising taxes now to reduce the debt are just shooting their own foot. I think they think that if enough debt is accumulated, the boomers will vote to slash their own retirement benefits. That is pure fantasy. It is not going to happen. The boomers are going to vote to raise taxes. And the longer it is put off, and the more debt that accumulates now, the higher the taxes are going to have to be in the future.

If the Govt hadn't run up 7.5 trillion in debt since 1981, and the SS trust fund had real assets, the amount of the tax increase required would have been negligible. No more. These are the crucial years when we will have $200 billion SS tax surpluses for the next decade. After that that source is gone.

Who was talking about moochers? We were talking about whether the rich and the poor should all pay the same amount in taxes.

We should stop the SS taxes (but not benefits) immediately, but put younger workers on notice that they'll never receive SS benefits.

Exactly the wrong approach. If we must have this pyramid scheme at all, we can delay the inevitable by encouraging MORE immigration. Immigration is what keeps the United States young and growing, as opposed to European countries with stagnant/declining populations.

No matter how you slice it, someone is going to be worse off as a result of any change (or lack of change) to SS. It might as well be the people who can afford it. Is it fair? No. Is it fair to make young people continue to pay into a system that they'll never receive anything from? No.

There's still medicare and food stamps. Although really, those things should be state issues. SS is even worse than those, because it's just wealth redistribution for no reason at all.
    Are you coming to bed?
    I can't. This is important.
