Can America be considered a British child?

More of a country cousin rather than a child of.

Actually Proper English, is called "Recieved Pronounciation" which pronounces all words in correct English. Also America has regional dialects as well.

There is no proper English anymore... that was the point and why I made a sarcastic comment about the majority.

The English cannot be trusted with the English language. Running around calling stairs apples. Sorry, but you forfeit command of the language. Also soccer is lame and real football is awesome. Also hockey. Cricket is a waste of 3 days. The only thing that England can do even remotely close to right is beer; and even there America has you beat. As such, "better civilized" is proper English.

Oh, and your food sucks.

Dont know where you got that fromOpinion not really justifiable An American's Guide to British Beer

Thanks to Americas "innovations" half the country lives off of fast food and Processed foods.

Ohhh... Just didnt see the sarcasm then. Sorry :3oops:

And thanks to British "innovation" I'm left with Big Brother knock offs, American Idol, America Has Talent, etc. If anyone is at fault for a larger travesty its your side's invention of reality TV.

And the other thing is British rhyming slang. I had a roommate from London who I couldn't understand half the time. Why the hell are stairs called apples? Because it's apples and pears and pears rhymes with stairs. That's just rude, you'll never keep a language by making things like that up.

The most frequently cited example—although it is almost never employed by current users[SUP][2][/SUP]—involves the replacement of "stairs" with the rhyming phrase "apples and pears". Following the usual pattern of omission, "(and) pears" is then dropped and "stairs" becomes "apples"; this is deciphered as "apples" > "apples and pears" > "stairs". Thus the spoken phrase "I'm going up the apples" means "I'm going ['up the stairs'/'upstairs']".In similar fashion, "telephone" is replaced by "dog" (= 'dog-and-bone'); "wife" by "trouble" (= 'trouble-and-strife'); "eyes" by "minces" (= 'mince pies'); "wig" by "syrup" (= 'syrup of figs') and "feet" by "plates" (= 'plates of meat'). Thus a construction of the following type could conceivably arise: "It nearly knocked me off me plates—he was wearing a syrup! So I got straight on the dog to me trouble and said I couldn't believe me minces."

Brilliant Film.

I like Monty Python. British TV can be quite brilliant at times, and I doubt I'll ever get enough Dr. Who. I watch my fair share of British TV. But some of it is a huge miss like Absolutely Fabulous and Are You Being Served.

Come on now, Rambo, Chuck Noris and Steven Segal are no better. ;) In other words, how holy is Holywood, hm?

That "rhyme" is the Graceful and wonderful dialect called cockney (note the sarcasm) and also reality TV is a disease that needs to be purged, Honestly its bulls**t. Dont understand those who watch it. Unfortunately America has taken the disease as well as the western world. Although Processed foods and reality tv seem to go hand in hand here...

The British flag is actually a compilation of 3 other flags. How would the British flag change were your goal of bringing the US into the British fold occur?

Great, now you can try to deny your language as English derivative. :golf

Well it's kinda just like processed foods. Processed foods are cheap to make, people will buy them. You can sell them cheap so more people buy them but you don't need everyone to buy them in order to turn a good profit. Processed foods are the lowest common denominator. The same with reality TV. It's exceptionally cheap to make, you'll get ad revenue, you don't need to earn as much money to turn a great profit as compared to a show that spends a lot of money to create an actual show. So even if it gets lowish ratings, you'll still turn a dollar. And some of those shows for some reason explode and you make a **** ton of money.

It appears that the lowest common denominator is easiest to spread because of its ease to make and ease to adapt to different markets.

Cowell, he is just a bad person. :2razz:

The only comedy I can laugh at that exclusively stars women. Kind of have to understand the Cult of Thatcher and Britain in the 80s to get it though.

What's next? BJ and the Bear?

Dunno, hope it's not Twin Peaks. :ssst:

Anyway, let'e get back to topic, shall we? The results of the poll are no surprise, I must say.

This is a post containing absolutely no value. Please contribute something of value to the thread or cease posting.

Sure it does... it alerts people to your trolling. When you post something about immigration that makes sense and isn't racist I will treat you as if you matter.

...and this coming from the guy that just passed up all the TJ Hooker and Steven Seagal comments

I posted a legitimate grievance with the assumption that English is the national language of the USA-- which it isn't. That is not off topic nor a derail. What is a derail is making obnoxious remarks directed towards me with no relation to the topic and for no other reason than a personal vendetta against me over being called out on bigotry by me weeks ago in another thread with a similar topic.

I was going to ask a question, but I see the thread already went stupid before I had a chance.

Gotta get in a thread quick, then know when to leave.

Can America be considered a British child?
:2razz:

The United States is the precocious and petulant eldest son of the British Empire that ran off on his own for a while then returned to take his place as the head of the family once he matured into manhood. Canada can be said to be the eldest sister while Australia and New Zealand are little brothers. Japan is the adopted child.
