It most definitely should.

Modern Western society is abnormal in that recognized adulthood occurs at age 18. In most societies, any member who has reached sexual maturity is considered an adult and responsible enough to make adult decisions, including those of sex and marriage.

It shouldn't be statutory rape unless one of the parties involved hasn't reached sexual maturity.

I'll agree with 16, as long as the other one involved is no more than 48 months older. 18 years old should be the age of consent with no age restrictions.

Hi Hoot, good to hear from you again!

I agree with your post, there's a HUGE difference between a 16 year old and an 18 year old having relations and a 52 year old (Foley) and a 16 year old.

18 should be the federal age, with a 2-3 years buffer as stated above. Give the teenagers and chance to graduate high school before you start handing them adult responsibilities and situations.

Yes, 16 should be the legal age. A 16-year-old is fully capable of consent. However, we could do what a lot of European countries have done: draw a distinction when the older person is in a position of authority over the younger. In those cases, the age should be 18.

Only reason that eighteen is even remotely acceptable is the fact that our laws define us as the legal and financial responsibility of our parents until then. In a sane world, we would recognize that there's a very good reason why fourteen- and fifteen-year-olds want to have sex, and why otherwise socially appropriate adults want to have sex with them:

Because that's when they're supposed to start having sex.

Why a buffer zone?

Because it is ridiculous for a sexual relationship between teenagers to be legal one week before the older party's birthday and illegal one week afterwards.

Not no but hell no.........A lot of 16 year olds might look 30 but they have no clue.......

Oh and a 55 year old president should not be doing a 22 year old intern either or anybody else who is not his wife..........

No this is not a federal issue and it violates the Tenth Amendment. Congress has no legitimate power to make such a law

A 55 year old man with a 22 year old intern is no where near as bad as 52 year old man with a 16 year old girl.

What about:
It is ridiculous for a sexual relationship between a 16 y/o and a 17 y/o to be legal one week before the older party's 18th. birthday and illegal one week afterwards?

"Her body, her choice", is it not?

21 - should be 21 why? Mental maturity regardless of the sexes does not reach full development until 21+/- 2.

How much mental maturity do you really need to have sex? It seems to me that those who have the least mental maturity tend to get laid the most.

To have sex, the moment you hit puberty.
However not to have stupid sex where "uh, how do I wear a condom" so on and so forth. Or girls thinking that putting out will result in the guy liking them more and so on. That's what I'm trying to avoid happening.

As far as I can tell, that kind of thinking still works for lots of women in their thirties.

So you would suggest that not only do we raise the federal age to 18 but also one of the following:

1. Invoke a age range for partners, say 10-15 years. If either one of those partners are out of the range it is considered statutory rape. So if I 75 year old man had sex with a 42 year old woman that would be statutory rape.

2. Make adulatory an illegal.

I love Glen Beck... He freaks me out sometimes because he's so wild about the topics he talks about but I actually agree with him when he does!

Anyway, the age of the minor doesn't need to be lowered. The maximum age of the 16 year old's partner needs to be increased. In MN where the age of consent is 16, the 16 year old can't have sex with anyone over 18 or it's statutory rape.

I don't really think the age should be raised above 18. While I have seen many attractive young women throughout my 20's and in my 30's, I always think to myself "gee, that girl is going to be a beautiful woman." I am not attracted to teenagers what so ever.

What did that guy from Florida say? "Yeah, I like them younger women. I just hate putting their diapers back on."

Remember when you guys were kids and the catch phrase of the day was "Old enough to bleed, old enough to breed?"

"!8 to 80, crippled or crazy"

"How'd I know she was only 13? She told me she was 14!"

"Do you know what you call a 13 year old virgin in Texas? UGLY!"
"I plead insanity your honor! I'm just crazy 'bout that young poontang."

Girlies use to marry at 14 back when my parents were young.

Strange how a young man's views can change as we mature and have daughters of our own.

Now days, when a young lady speaks to me she says, "Sir, would you like paper or plastic?"

The problem is... we do not allow them to marry at fourteen, and we do not prohibit premarital sex as we once did... but we still view sex as something that sexually mature young women must be protected from.

And as I've said before... there's a reason that "children" that age want to have sex, and a reason why healthy adults consider them sexually desirable.

I didn't know they made paper condoms.

so credited.

I find that most girls between 13-18 are a lot less slutty than girls between 19-24.
