    Turtle, generally, I like your posts, but i think this lacks some intellectual honesty and overall fairness;

    Democrats - "You are poor, and it's all white guy/rich guy/conservative guy/(insert target guy)'s fault."

    which is equally as dubious as;

    Republicans - Democrats are spending us into oblivion, and it will drown your grandchildren........Hold on, Something is happening in Israel. Better incite war.

    I think for many, the choice comes down to constant wars, or explosive debt. It's a ****ty choice, and why I have yet to cast a ballot for an R or a D in ANY presidential election.

    It's extremely hard to escape without help. Silver spooners get help from their families.

    I don't have to, I choose to. After I get the windows done (I have 8 more windows that need to be redone on the sides of the house but that's a project for next summer), I get to paint the kitchen, then I'm going to take down the incredibly heavy sliding carriage doors on the garage and probably build new ones from scratch.

    I have no idea, I've never seen his house (he's in Arizona), just heard him talk about it. He said he had a lot of windows and it cost him $12k. Beyond that, I have no clue but I could ask.

    being dependent on government is never an escape though and powerful interests want to keep people dependent

    No, it's not that hard. Planning your education and wise money management are the keys. Effort and responsibility are what those who whine about it being hard are lacking. You've got your textbooks and library in high school for study materials. If you actually take advantage of those, you can significantly increase your chances of acceptance to any university and scholarships. For money, there are a large number of strategies to significantly increase the value of your dollar. Shopping for sales and clearances, using coupons, bargaining, etc. can be combined to effectively allow you to live as if your income was double. The moral of the story is to live opportunistically if you want to increase your worth.

    Upper middle, moderate-liberal (no party affiliations for obvious reasons)

    I am democrat, voted for Obama, I fall under lower middle class smack dab in the middle of it making my situation better than roughly 54% of Americans.
    Don't know how to rank ourselves per Class_US.svg . Retired, own 3 homes for our use, two bought with cash. Use a small finiancial advisor company. etc.

    Is it combined household income, or my personal income? My wife makes about twice as much as I do.

    My income is "working class" my wife's is "lower mid" and our combined income puts us closer to "upper mid," but the very low end of it. I have a BA, my wife has an MA, so our educations are higher on the chart than our incomes. I voted for Johnson, she voted for Obama. Hard as it may be for some to believe, there are actually people more liberal than I am, and I'm sleeping with one of them.

    Agree 100%. While a car is a necessity for many people, a new car is always a luxury. With modern vehicle manufacture, you are as likely to have reliability problems with one straight out of the showroom as you are one with 3 years regular use and mileage, and you'll pay 30-50% of the cost of a new one. If you can afford to buy new, you're not struggling.
